Who Is Nyesom Wike, Tinubu’s Opposition Ally

PROFILE · NIGERIA

Nyesom Wike, the minister who runs Nigeria’s capital territory, admitted on Monday 12 October that he helped the ruling party beat his own. He told a cross-party meeting in Abuja that he was “behind” the 2024 Edo alliance and has “no regrets”.

The admission matters beyond Nigeria because Wike now openly works to re-elect President Bola Tinubu while keeping his opposition party card. For US investors, a smoother path for Tinubu points to continuity in Africa’s most populous country and a major oil exporter.

Wike, a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), spoke at a meeting of the Rainbow Coalition, according to Premium Times. That is a cross-party platform mobilising support for Tinubu, the leader of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), in 2027.

From Rivers Governor to Abuja Minister

Wike was sworn in as governor of Rivers State on Friday 29 May 2015 and served two four-year terms. Rivers, whose capital is Port Harcourt, sits at the centre of Nigeria’s oil-producing Niger Delta.

Tinubu swore him in as FCT minister on Monday 21 August 2023, Daily Post reported. The post puts him in charge of administering Abuja, the federal capital, including land titles and city planning.

On the day he was sworn in, Wike vowed to do the job without fear or favour. He said that included the national secretariat of his own party if it lacked a valid certificate of occupancy.

The PDP governed Nigeria from 1999 until 2015 and remains the best-known opposition brand. Premium Times reports that Wike is still a PDP member despite serving in Tinubu’s APC-led government.

The party is now split into rival camps, one of them backed by Wike. INEC, the electoral commission, has been dealing with a National Working Committee led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, Daily Post reported in August.

A rival faction, linked to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, is led by Tanimu Turaki. Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s 2023 nominee, is now the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

What Wike Said About Edo

The Edo governorship election was held on Saturday 21 September 2024. INEC declared the APC’s Monday Okpebholo the winner with 291,667 votes, against 247,274 for the PDP’s Asue Ighodalo.

Labour Party candidate Olumide Akpata received 22,763 votes, according to INEC’s announced results. The Supreme Court upheld Okpebholo’s victory in July 2025, Daily Post reported.

Wike said his aim was to stop the outgoing PDP governor, Godwin Obaseki, from installing a successor. Obaseki governed Edo from 2016 to 2024 and backed Ighodalo, whom Wike described as a former bank chairman.

Wike said Ighodalo came to see him “more than three times” to ask for support. “Returning you would be like bringing him back, so I am sorry, you have to fail,” Wike recalled telling him.

He said Adams Oshiomhole, a former APC national chairman, could attest to the alliance. Wike also argued that coalitions across party lines have long been a normal part of Nigerian elections.

A Record of Crossing Party Lines

Edo was not the first time Wike worked against his own party’s candidate. Before the 2023 election he led the G-5, five PDP governors who refused to back the party’s presidential nominee, Atiku Abubakar.

The group demanded the resignation of then party chairman Iyorchia Ayu, arguing that the nominee and chairman should not both come from the north. Tinubu won that election, with Atiku second and the Labour Party’s Peter Obi third.

In Rivers, INEC declared Tinubu the winner with 231,591 votes, ahead of Obi with 175,071 and Atiku with 88,468. A later Premium Times review of uploaded polling-unit results found substantial discrepancies in Obio/Akpor, Wike’s political stronghold.

In March 2025, Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers and installed an administrator, retired Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas. Daily Post reported that the president announced it in a nationwide broadcast on the night of Tuesday 18 March.

Tinubu’s Opposition Ally for 2027

At Monday’s meeting, Wike declared himself coordinator of Tinubu’s re-election campaign in the FCT and Rivers State. Participants from the PDP and APC reportedly agreed to back APC candidates for the FCT’s Senate and House seats.

Daily Trust reported on Tuesday that the APC’s revised presidential campaign council formally named him coordinator for both (see APC Campaign Council Adds Wike, Adeleke, Soludo). The same list made Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke the campaign coordinator in Osun.

Senator Abdulaziz Yari remains director-general of the re-election campaign, Daily Trust said. Oshiomhole, the former Edo governor Wike cited as a witness to the Edo deal, is deputy director-general for mobilisation.

The arrangement puts Wike in the position of campaigning against candidates of the party he formally belongs to. For a wider map of who holds power, see Nigeria Politics Explained, Who Holds Power in 2026.

What It Means for US Readers

For US investors and policymakers, the main signal is that Tinubu is assembling support from inside the opposition well before the vote. A broad coalition could lower the odds of an abrupt reversal of his economic programme, covered in Nigeria’s Tinubu Cites World Bank Report on 4.2% Growth.

Rivers State is home to Port Harcourt, a hub of the Niger Delta oil and gas industry that drives Nigeria’s exports. Political calm there matters to energy companies, shipping firms and anyone watching global oil supply.

The risk is that deal-making across party lines weakens the opposition and feeds distrust in elections. At least 25 observer groups said the 2024 Edo vote fell short of expectations, criticising how results were collated, Daily Post reported.

Americans who visit or work in Abuja deal with a city whose land and planning decisions run through Nyesom Wike’s office. Any shift in his political standing could therefore reach well beyond party politics.

What Is Not Known

It is not known whether the PDP will discipline Nyesom Wike, or which faction would have the authority to do so. No formal response from either faction to Monday’s remarks could be confirmed by Tuesday evening.

It is also unclear how many PDP voters in Rivers and the FCT will follow him to Tinubu. The Rainbow Coalition has not yet been tested at the ballot box as a platform.

Wike’s account of how the 2024 Edo result was won has not been independently confirmed. The PDP disputed that result at the time, but the Supreme Court later upheld Okpebholo’s win.

What Prediction Markets Say

Polymarket, a crypto-based betting platform, gives Tinubu a 74% chance of winning the 2027 presidential election as of 2:49 p.m. ET on 13 October. Peter Obi is next at 21%, and these prices reflect bets, not polls.

About US$130,000 has been traded on the overall election market, including about US$82,000 on the Tinubu contract. Tinubu’s price has risen about 2.5 percentage points over the past week.

Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.
