Netflix and Amazon Prime Video offer Nigerian viewers access to Nollywood films, international movies, television series and original productions. But which service gives you more for your money?
Netflix has several subscription plans with different prices and picture quality. Prime Video may cost less, depending on the price available at sign-up, and both services offer a range of films and series.
This article compares their prices, Nigerian content, data usage, payment methods and features to help you decide which service suits your needs.
Subscription Prices in Nigeria
Netflix publishes four monthly subscription plans for Nigeria. Each offers different picture quality and viewing options.
| Netflix plan | Monthly price | Picture quality |
| Mobile | ₦2,500 | 480p |
| Basic | ₦4,000 | 720p |
| Standard | ₦6,500 | 1080p |
| Premium | ₦8,500 | 4K Ultra HD and HDR |
The Mobile plan is the cheapest option and is designed for phones and tablets. Standard offers Full HD, while Premium supports 4K and HDR on compatible devices and titles.

Prime Video cost ₦2,300 per month. It also offers an official annual rate of ₦23,000/year (saving about ₦4,600 compared to monthly payments).
Which Offers Better Value for Money?
A cheap subscription is not automatically the best deal. What matters is what you can watch for the price you pay.
Netflix gives subscribers access to the titles included in their plan. Prime Video also has a catalogue of included films and series.
Here is what the listed monthly prices would cost over a year if they stayed the same
| Plan | Estimated annual cost |
| Netflix Mobile | ₦30,000 |
| Netflix Basic | ₦48,000 |
| Netflix Standard | ₦78,000 |
| Netflix Premium | ₦102,000 |
| Prime Video | ₦27,600 |
At those prices, Prime Video would cost less per year than any of Netflix’s listed plans. However, the value you get also depends on the titles available and whether you need to pay extra for particular films categorized for rentals.
Nigerian Films and Original Productions
For viewers who enjoy Nollywood, the films available on each platform can be an important factor.Netflix has invested in Nigerian films and series, including Blood Sisters and The Black Book. Its catalogue combines local productions with international entertainment.
Prime Video has also released Nigerian productions. One example is Gangs of Lagos, a crime drama set in Lagos.
However, Amazon’s plans for African original productions have changed. Rest of World reported in 2024 on Amazon’s decision to end a planned African original-production initiative. Although they continue to acquire movies produced by independent producers
Neither service publishes a reliable, directly comparable count of all Nigerian films in its catalogue, and the selection changes over time.
International Content
Both services offer international films, drama series, comedies, documentaries and original productions.
Netflix is known for its international series and films, while Prime Video offers Amazon-produced titles alongside entertainment licensed from other studios.
The selection changes over time, and availability can differ between countries. A film recommended by someone overseas may not be available in Nigeria.
The practical approach is to search both catalogues for the films and series you enjoy before subscribing. This gives you a better idea of which service has more of the content you want.
Picture Quality and Watching Experience
Netflix lists the maximum picture quality associated with each plan. Prime Video’s picture quality depends on the title, device and available stream.
If you mainly watch on a phone, you may not need the highest-resolution plan. On a large television, however, the difference between standard definition, Full HD and 4K can be easier to notice.

Both services support downloads for eligible titles through their mobile apps. You can save films and episodes to watch offline, although downloads may have expiry dates or other restrictions.
The number of screens that can stream simultaneously also matters if you share a subscription.
Netflix’s Standard plan supports two simultaneous streams, while Premium supports four. Its lower plans have more limited viewing options. Prime Video generally allows up to three simultaneous streams on one account, but the same title can be watched on no more than two devices at once under its standard rules.
Data Usage: How Much Will Streaming Cost?
Your subscription is only part of the cost. In Nigeria, mobile data can add considerably to what you spend on entertainment.
Video quality affects data usage. Lower-resolution streams generally consume less data than HD or 4K streams, although actual usage varies by device, settings and content.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has used estimates of around 350MB per hour for standard-definition video and about 1GB per hour for HD video in its consumer data guidance. These are estimates, not fixed amounts for every streaming service.
Using those figures, here is what one hour of daily viewing could mean over 30 days.
| Viewing quality | Estimated data per hour | Estimated data for one hour daily over 30 days |
| Standard | 350MB | 10.5GB |
| HD | 1GB | 30GB |
At those rates, watching two hours of HD video every day could use approximately 60GB in a month. Two hours of standard-definition video could use around 21GB.
These figures are estimates based on the stated hourly rates. Actual usage may differ.
To reduce data spending, download films over Wi-Fi, select a lower streaming quality when using mobile data and avoid streaming in 4K on a small phone screen.
Payment, Ads, Free Trials and Cancellation
Payment methods
Netflix accepts credit and debit cards, including Visa and Mastercard, subject to the payment options available to your account. Card payments can depend on the issuing bank and card settings, including whether recurring online or international transactions are supported.
Check the methods displayed during sign-up, and do not assume every virtual card will work. Netflix does not list Paga as a payment method on its general payment information page.
Prime Video accepts supported credit and debit cards. Amazon also lists Paga as a digital-wallet payment option for Nigerian subscribers. Payment options for individual rentals or purchases may differ, so check the checkout screen before paying.
Ads and free trials
Netflix does not list an ad-supported subscription plan among its Nigerian plans. Advertising options available on Prime Video in other countries should not automatically be assumed to apply to Nigerian accounts.
Neither service should be assumed to offer a free trial to every Nigerian customer. Promotions depend on the account and sign-up offer. Check the terms displayed directly by the service, including when a paid subscription begins.
Cancellation
Netflix allows subscribers to cancel online without a cancellation fee, with access generally continuing until the end of the current billing period. Prime Video subscriptions can also be managed through account settings, although cancellation may need to be handled by the app store or provider used to sign up.
Deleting a streaming app from your phone does not cancel the subscription. Confirm cancellation through the correct account or provider and check your next billing date.
Renting and Buying Films on Prime Video
Prime Video offers some titles for rent or purchase separately from its subscription catalogue.
Rental conditions can vary. Amazon’s help information explains that rental viewing periods and deadlines apply, so check the terms displayed for the specific title before paying.
Netflix generally works differently. Its standard subscription model gives you access to titles included in your plan rather than offering a general store for renting or buying individual films.
If a particular new release is your reason for subscribing to Prime Video, check its listing to see whether it is included or carries a separate rental or purchase price.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose Netflix if:
- Nigerian films and series are a priority for you.
- You want to compare picture quality and simultaneous-screen options before paying.
- You prefer a straightforward subscription model.
- One of Netflix’s plans fits your monthly budget.
Consider Prime Video if:
- Its current subscription price is lower than the Netflix plan you are considering.
- It carries Nigerian or international titles you want to watch.
- You want access to Amazon’s original productions.
- You prefer having Paga as a listed digital-wallet option for eligible Nigerian subscription payments.
Netflix offers several plans at different price points, while Prime Video may cost less if the listed price is available to you. Both provide local and international entertainment.
Ultimately, the better choice depends on your budget, viewing habits and the content available to you. Choose the service that gives you the entertainment you want at a price you can comfortably afford.
