On Friday, MTC Namibia rewarded the Desert Jewels, the national netball team, with N$400 000 in cash and an additional N$400 000 worth of gifts following their historic qualification for the 2027 Netball World Cup in Sydney, Australia.
The cash reward will see each player, coach and member of the technical team receive N$20 000, while the team will also receive tablets and handsets valued at a combined N$400 000 in recognition of their dedication, commitment and outstanding performance.
The gesture recognises the team’s remarkable achievement and its contribution to placing Namibia on the global sporting stage.
The Desert Jewels’ qualification marks a significant milestone for Namibian sport, demonstrating the team’s discipline and determination to compete against the world’s best netball nations.
Speaking at the press conference held at Palm Hotel, MTC chief brand, marketing, communications and sustainability officer Tim Ekandjo said the achievement had made the nation proud and inspired young Namibians to pursue excellence.
“Sport continues to be a powerful platform through which Namibia’s talent, determination and national pride are showcased. The Desert Jewels have made the entire nation proud, and this contribution is our way of recognising their hard work and celebrating this historic achievement,” Ekandjo said.
Speaking on behalf of the team, Desert Jewels assistant coach Kamutushi Nanguloshi welcomed the gesture and thanked MTC for its continued support of sport in the country.
“On behalf of the team, we are grateful for the support from MTC. When you have corporate Namibia supporting sport, we will go far as a country,” she said.
Nanguloshi added that the team was determined to make an impact at the global showpiece.
“We are not going to Sydney to just participate; we are going to compete and represent our country with pride,” she said.
At the same event, Ekandjo announced an increase in the monthly player allowance for the Netball Namibia Premier League, which comprises 12 clubs each season.
Starting next season, each player in the league will receive N$1 700 per month, up from the current N$1 200.
