Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and his wife, Lori Huang, have donated $75 million to Vanderbilt University to help establish a new college focused on art, architecture and design at its planned San Francisco campus.
Announced on July 21, 2026, the gift has helped attract additional contributions, taking total philanthropic support for the campus beyond $100 million, according to the university. The donation will establish the Jen-Hsun and Lori Huang College of Art, Architecture and Design, which is intended to bring creative disciplines together with technology, engineering and entrepreneurship. The campus is expected to open in 2027, subject to regulatory approvals, and will build on the legacy of the California College of the Arts.
How the $75 million donation pushed Vanderbilt's campus funding past $100 million
The Huang family's contribution is structured as a matching gift, designed to encourage other donors to support the university's expansion in San Francisco. Vanderbilt said the donation had already generated further philanthropic commitments from alumni and other supporters, taking the total investment in the campus beyond $100 million.Among the early supporters named by the university are Katie and Matt Paige, Jeff and Marieke Rothschild, and Leah and Ben Spero.
The fundraising effort also includes significant commitments from anonymous donors and members of the Bay Area's arts and creative communities.Vanderbilt said it had secured more than 40% of the funding needed to realise the full match by December 31, 2028. The commitments will support the establishment and operation of the new college, along with additional academic programmes planned for the campus.
Why the new college will combine art with technology
The Jen-Hsun and Lori Huang College of Art, Architecture and Design is intended to make creative disciplines central to Vanderbilt's San Francisco campus.
Its proposed academic model will combine studio practice and design labs with technical education, engineering and entrepreneurship. The university plans to offer undergraduate and graduate programmes, as well as community arts, pre-collegiate and lifelong-learning opportunities. These programmes remain subject to the necessary academic reviews and regulatory approvals.Huang explained the thinking behind the contribution in Vanderbilt's announcement, saying, “Technology expands what we can build.
Art and design determine why we build it. Together they shape civilization.”The initiative reflects the family's stated belief that artistic creativity and design are important to technological progress, business innovation and the cultural life of a city.
Vanderbilt plans to open its San Francisco campus in 2027
The university expects the new campus to serve approximately 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students, alongside full-time faculty and staff. It is part of Vanderbilt's wider expansion beyond its main campus in Nashville, Tennessee. The San Francisco project will build on the nearly 120-year legacy of the California College of the Arts (CCA). Vanderbilt and CCA have agreed that CCA will contribute its campus to Vanderbilt after its operations wind down, subject to customary regulatory and other transaction requirements.Vanderbilt also plans to establish the California College of the Arts Institute to preserve and extend CCA's artistic and cultural legacy.
The proposed institute will include the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, preserve and digitise CCA's archives, and support artists, designers, architects, curators and scholars through fellowships and residencies. The university has begun a national search for the founding dean of the new college. Its opening remains dependent on the required approvals, with the first students expected in 2027.
The Huangs have also backed scientific and AI research
The Vanderbilt contribution is separate from another philanthropic initiative involving the couple.
In May 2026, Reuters reported that the foundation run by Jensen and Lori Huang had purchased computing time from CoreWeave and donated it to universities and nonprofit institutions for scientific and artificial intelligence research.A regulatory filing valued the computing resources donated through that initiative at $108.3 million. Nvidia also planned to provide free engineering services to some recipients. The arrangement involved CoreWeave, a cloud computing company that uses Nvidia-designed graphics processing units for AI workloads. Reuters noted that Nvidia had invested $2 billion in CoreWeave and agreed to purchase $6.3 billion in cloud capacity from the company, relationships that had raised investor concerns about potential circular financing. The computing donation and the Vanderbilt gift serve different purposes. The former supports research infrastructure, while the latter backs a new academic institution intended to connect art, design and technology in San Francisco.
