Police have arrested 23-year-old Sakib Hasan Sani, the alleged leader of the "De Lara" teenage gang in the capital's Uttara, who faces at least seven cases filed at different police stations across Dhaka over allegations including drug dealing, mugging and violence against women and children.
Sani, better known as Pichchi Sani, was arrested around 11:30pm yesterday (21 October) from the BNS Centre area in Sector 7 under Uttara West Police Station.
Uttara West Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalid Mansur confirmed the matter, saying legal proceedings against Sani were underway.
According to police, Sani is a former cultural affairs secretary of the Uttara East thana unit of the banned Chhatra League under its Dhaka North unit.
In February 2025, the then Rapid Action Battalion-1 arrested him with a firearm over allegations that he had attacked protesters during the 2024 July Uprising.
The locally known "De Lara" gang has long faced allegations of involvement in drug dealing, extortion, mugging and other criminal activities.
Media reports have linked the group's activities to several areas of Uttara, as well as parts of Uttarkhan, Dakshinkhan and Tongi.
The group has also been accused of involvement in drug sales along the railway corridor stretching from Uttara Sector 8 to Tongi Railway Station.
On 30 August, Uttara West police arrested Sani along with four associates. Police said they recovered Tk10 lakh in cash and a private car during that operation.
