KUALA LUMPUR: Young people aged 30 and below recorded 65.9 million buy now, pay later (BNPL) transactions worth RM5.4 billion in the first half of 2026, accounting for 37.9 per cent of total transactions nationwide.
In a written reply published on Parliament's website today, the Finance Ministry said Malaysia recorded 173.9 million BNPL transactions worth RM14.7 billion during the period.
The younger demographic accounted for 36.7 per cent of the total transaction value.
As at June 30, their outstanding BNPL financing stood at RM2.4 billion, while non-performing financing amounted to RM96.8 million, or four per cent of the outstanding balance.
The ministry was responding to a question from Datuk Dr Alias Razak (Kuala Nerus-PN) on measures taken by the Consumer Credit Commission to protect young people from excessive indebtedness through BNPL schemes, including comprehensive assessments of consumers' existing credit commitments.
