Ronaldo scores amid Riyadh security scare to close in on 1,000 career goals

Cristiano Ronaldo continued his relentless pursuit of 1,000 career goals by scoring his 981st strike in professional football, helping Al-Nassr secure a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan's Neftchi Fergana in the AFC Champions League Elite on Monday.

But the Portuguese superstar's latest goal came on a night when football briefly took a back seat to security concerns in Riyadh, while the disciplinary controversy surrounding his departure from Portugal's national team camp remained unresolved. The match at Al-Awwal Park was delayed by an hour after Saudi Arabia's Civil Defence issued a security alert shortly before the scheduled kick-off. The warning followed reports of ballistic missiles launched towards Riyadh by Yemen-based Houthi rebels, with the Saudi-led coalition saying it had intercepted and destroyed missiles targeting the capital.

Explosions were also heard in the city before authorities subsequently announced that the danger had passed.

Despite the unsettling circumstances and the wait to get the match underway, Al-Nassr eventually delivered on the pitch. Angelo Gabriel opened the scoring before Ronaldo doubled the advantage, with the 41-year-old once again demonstrating his ability to remain decisive in front of goal. The victory also provided a sporting boost for Ronaldo as he continues to chase one of football's most remarkable individual milestones, even as questions over his international future remain in the spotlight.

Ronaldo strikes again as 1,000-goal milestone gets closer

Al-Nassr took the lead in the 33rd minute when Angelo found the net with a deflected strike. Nine minutes later, Ronaldo doubled the advantage with a superb finish that underlined his instincts inside the penalty area. The move began with Sadio Mane delivering a looping cross from the left. Aiman Yahya directed the ball into Ronaldo's path with his chest, allowing the Portuguese forward to strike on the turn and send a powerful effort into the bottom corner. It was Ronaldo's 981st career goal across club and international football, leaving him 19 short of reaching the landmark of 1,000. At 41, the former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus forward continues to add to a scoring record built over more than two decades at the highest level.Neftchi attempted to fight their way back into the contest when Alisher Odilov reduced the deficit six minutes into the second half.

The visitors, however, suffered a major setback when Ikromjon Alibaev was sent off in the 65th minute for a foul on Mohamed Simakan.Al-Nassr capitalised on their numerical advantage when Anvarjon Gofurov put the ball into his own net in the 78th minute, restoring the Saudi side's two-goal cushion and sealing a 3-1 victory.Ronaldo later celebrated the result on Instagram, posting: "Important win tonight. We keep building."

Portugal controversy continues after national-team walkout

Ronaldo's return to club football has coincided with a disciplinary dispute involving the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), which provisionally suspended the forward after opening proceedings over his departure from the national-team camp. The controversy followed Portugal's recent UEFA Nations League fixtures. Ronaldo was left unused during a victory over Norway after warming up with the expectation that he might feature.

He subsequently left the squad's base in Copenhagen before Portugal's match against Denmark, amid a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus over his role and playing time.Ronaldo reportedly felt that an understanding about his involvement had not been honoured. The dispute escalated when he left the camp, prompting the federation to initiate disciplinary proceedings. The FPF's disciplinary council subsequently imposed a non-automatic provisional suspension and classified the case as urgent.

The measure is preliminary, with the investigation intended to establish whether Ronaldo's actions warrant a further sanction.Under the disciplinary regulations cited in reports, a player who leaves a national-team camp without justification can face a suspension ranging from one month to six months, alongside a financial penalty. The relevant provision states: "Any player who, after being lawfully called up, leaves without justification or does not attend a training session, a match, or any national team activity, or anything connected to the sporting representation of the Portuguese Football Federation or Portugal, shall be punished with a suspension ranging between one month and six months, and in addition, if the player is a professional, with a fine ranging between 5 and 10 accounting units.

"The potential consequences have placed Ronaldo's international future under renewed scrutiny. The forward remains Portugal's all-time leading scorer, and his desire to continue representing his country has not disappeared. However, the disciplinary process means that the episode cannot simply be dismissed as a disagreement over selection. There have also been signs that the door remains open for reconciliation, with Portuguese football officials and the coaching camp expressing a desire to resolve the situation.

Nevertheless, the formal proceedings leave the question of any final punishment outstanding.

A prolific scorer amid uncertainty over his international future

For Ronaldo, the timing presents a striking contrast. At club level, he continues to deliver goals and move closer to a four-figure career tally. Away from Al-Nassr, however, his relationship with Portugal's setup faces a difficult period following the walkout and the subsequent disciplinary action.

His goal against Neftchi was therefore significant for more than the result.

It reinforced the forward's continued productivity at an advanced stage of his career while providing a reminder of the standards he has maintained across different leagues and competitions. The security delay also added an unusual backdrop to the contest. Players and spectators had to wait for confirmation that the situation was safe before the match could proceed, and the teams then had to refocus on the task at hand. Al-Nassr ultimately responded by securing three points, with Ronaldo playing a central role.
