Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Hossain Fakir has warned that action will be taken against those spreading misinformation about Durga Puja, saying police are alert to attempts to disrupt the festival.
Police and other law enforcement agencies were working tirelessly to ensure overall security during the festival, he said while speaking to journalists after visiting a Durga Puja mandap at Ramakrishna Mission in Narayanganj tonight (19 October).
Durga Puja was being celebrated in a festive atmosphere thanks to people's spontaneous participation and cooperation, as well as coordination among law enforcement agencies, he added.
"Some people are attempting to spread misinformation about Durga Puja. Police are alert and vigilant against them. Police are committed to foiling all such attempts and maintaining peace and order in society," he said.
Stating that police maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards drugs, terrorism and extortion, the IGP said those involved in such crimes would be brought to justice.
He urged the public to share information about extortionists and terrorists with police, warning that strict action would be taken against them.
Ali Hossain Fakir also said Bangladesh Police had recovered after the July mass uprising. He urged citizens to obey the law and cooperate with police in maintaining law and order.
Later, the IGP visited several other Durga Puja mandaps, including one in Narayanganj's Amlapara, and exchanged greetings with visitors.
