October 18, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka is moving ahead with plans to reshape its education system, with a focus on improving the quality of schooling, easing the academic pressure on pupils and preparing young people for the future, Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya has said.
Speaking at a women’s rally organised by the National People’s Power (NPP) in Badulla, the Prime Minister stressed that access to quality education remains a key concern for families. She noted that parents and grandparents share a common aspiration: to give children the knowledge, skills and opportunities they need to build secure and successful lives.
Dr Amarasuriya said the government had started work on an education framework designed to provide children across the country with a stronger foundation for learning. The proposed changes are intended to improve the learning experience while ensuring that pupils are better equipped to face future challenges.
As part of the reform programme, a revised curriculum for Grade 1 was introduced this year. New curricula are scheduled to be rolled out for Grades 2 and 6 in 2027, marking another stage in the planned overhaul of school education.
The Prime Minister said the changes would bring updated curricula to Grades 1, 2 and 6 within a two-year period. The initiative aims to make education more effective and manageable for children, with greater attention to their long-term development and future prospects.
The reform effort also reflects the wider challenge of creating an education system that responds to the needs of pupils, supports teachers and provides a sound basis for further studies at universities. The government’s stated objective is to ensure that children receive an education that prepares them not only for examinations, but also for the opportunities and demands of adult life.
