The Ayudha Puja festivities have left heaps of garbage across several parts of Tiruchi, prompting the Tiruchi Corporation to intensify its cleaning operations.
According to Corporation sources, around 226 tonnes of additional waste was collected between October 16 and 20. On an average, about 470 tonnes of waste is generated daily in the city.
Heaps of garbage, including discarded and unsold plantains, were found on Thanjavur Road, Singarathope, NSB Road, Big Bazaar Street, Chinnakadai Street, Nandi Koil Street, and Sathara Veedhi in Srirangam, particularly near temples and market areas.
Heber Road, Eda Street, Woraiyur Market, Gandhi Market, and Panchavarna Swami Temple Street in Zones I and V were identified as major waste-generation points during the festival.
In addition to routine garbage collection, the Corporation deployed around 35 night sanitation workers and seven light commercial vehicles as part of a special cleaning drive.
A group of workers was engaged in cleaning operations on Monday night while another group continued the work until afternoon on Tuesday. The teams focused primarily on major roads and streets, market areas, and near temples.
An official said that the volume of waste generated in the city was expected to remain high until Wednesday as residents typically disposed of dried leaves and plantain plants a few days after Ayudha Puja.
