Phones in Mallorca on Sunday were sounding the siren alert for a severe weather warning, there being a high risk of flooding because of the 'DANA' weather system affecting the Balearics. In Ibiza and Formentera, warnings were sent to phones earlier on Sunday when the islands were placed on red alert for a time.
Given the forecast, the Balearic Government has ordered the cancellation of classes at schools in Mallorca, Ibiza, and Formentera on Monday. Schools will therefore be closed. Red alerts for heavy rain have been issued for parts of Mallorca (south, interior, east) from midnight Sunday up to 6am. Amber alerts are otherwise in place up to noon Monday. Yellow alerts will apply for the rest of the day, unless the met agency alters the warnings.
The INUNBAL flood emergency plan has been activated, and the army's military emergency unit has deployed personnel from its Third Battalion based in Valencia to Ibiza and Mallorca. They will bolster the emergency response operations, which are being scaled up in anticipation of what are expected to be critical hours, based on current meteorological models and forecasts.
