The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, Venatius Ikem, has stepped down from his position with immediate effect, citing internal divisions and leadership challenges within the party.
Ikem communicated his decision on Friday in a resignation letter addressed to the PDP National Secretary at the party’s national headquarters, Wadata House, in Abuja. The letter was also copied to the party’s secretary in Cross River State.
The lawyer explained that persistent disagreements among party members had made it increasingly difficult for him to discharge his responsibilities effectively as state chairman.
He said his decision followed a careful assessment of the party’s internal situation and the difficulties confronting its leadership and unity.
In the letter, Ikem expressed concern that the growing disagreements within the PDP had undermined efforts to establish a shared sense of purpose among members.
He indicated that the divisions had created an atmosphere in which it was becoming increasingly difficult to coordinate the party’s activities and pursue common political objectives.

The outgoing chairman also highlighted the timing of the crisis, noting that the party was approaching another electoral season when unity, strategic planning and effective leadership would be particularly important.
According to him, the internal disputes could weaken the PDP’s ability to advance its political ambitions and undermine the contributions of members who had invested their time, resources and commitment in the party.
