Guwahati, Oct 17: The Assam Legislative Assembly Secretariat has dismissed reports that Bodo language signage was removed from the Assembly building, terming the claims baseless and false.
In an official press release issued on Saturday, Assembly Secretary Rajib Bhattacharyya clarified that no decision had been taken and no steps had been initiated to remove the Bodo language from the Assembly premises.
According to the Secretariat, ongoing maintenance and repair work on the front facade of the Assembly building had led to temporary modifications, triggering misunderstandings and rumours about the removal of the language signage.
The clarification follows strong objections raised by the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) on October 16 over what it perceived as the removal of Bodo signage from the state legislature.
The students’ organisation had described the reported development as an insult to the identity and dignity of the Bodo community. It warned that such actions could force it to revive the historic agitation for a separate Bodoland state.
ABSU had also pointed out that Bodo enjoys the status of an associate official language in Assam and demanded its immediate and explicit restoration on the Assembly premises.
In its clarification, the Assembly Secretariat urged the public and organisations not to be misled by unverified information. It reiterated the legislature’s commitment to following official administrative standards and respecting the state’s linguistic diversity.
The clarification seeks to address the concerns surrounding the signage and the resulting controversy over the recognition of the Bodo language at the state legislature.
