Ahead of the first ESPN Super Bowl broadcast in 2027, another alternate broadcast, which will be inspired by Disney’s Star Wars, has been announced.
ESPN has announced the “Star Wars Funday Football” alternate broadcast for Super Bowl 61, which airs on Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14) next year.
A teaser was released featuring C-3PO and R2-D2 walking through the desert. Once again, C-3PO is displeased with getting into another “mess.”

“How did we get into this mess?” he asks R2-D2. “Seems we are made to suffer. It’s our lot in life.”
R2-D2 begins chirping, telling his friend that they are Super Bowl-bound. C-3PO is happy with the news, admitting that he is “ready for some football.”
The “Funday Football” alternate broadcast will be aired on Disney+, Disney Channel, Disney XD, and the ESPN app. So, viewers will have several different ways of tuning in.
According to the press release, the “Funday Football” broadcast will “recreate every play” of the game in real time, “transforming players on the field into animated avatars.” Various Star Wars characters will “sub in during key moments,” and there will be Easter eggs to look out for throughout the game.
ESPN and Disney will have another special NFL collaboration before Super Bowl 61

The collaborations between ESPN/Disney and the NFL will begin before Super Bowl 61. Starting during the Monday Night Football game on Oct. 26 between the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles, Darth Vader will be interviewing a player from the game on SportsCenter+.
Additionally, starting on Oct. 20, SportsCenter on Disney+ will feature “Hyperspace Highlights, which are Star Wars-themed highlights from Monday Night Football.
ESPN is going all out for its first Super Bowl broadcast. Of course, Joe Buck, Troy Aikman, Lisa Salters, and Laura Rutledge will call the traditional broadcast on ESPN, ABC, and Disney+. Peyton and Eli Manning will also host a ManningCast live from Los Angeles, California.
