A bedroom can look inviting in daylight and become surprisingly uncomfortable once you turn in. Streetlights reach around the curtains, the duvet feels too warm and a phone lights up beside the pillow. In a small apartment, the desk facing the bed may also hold everything you have yet to finish.
Looking at the room after dark helps identify what needs attention. Published sleep guidance consistently recommends a quiet, dark, comfortably cool environment. Many improvements involve rearranging what you own, changing an evening habit or buying one inexpensive item. Start with the disturbance you notice most, then assess whether the change helps over several nights.
Look for stray light
Light helps regulate the body’s sleep and waking rhythm, making the bedroom’s lighting worth examining. In guidance published by Stanford Lifestyle Medicine in October 2025, sleep physician Cheri Mah describes the desired conditions as “dark, cool, and quiet”. She recommends blackout curtains or a comfortable eye mask to reduce unwanted light.
Switch off the main light and allow your eyes to adjust. Check the window edges, the gap beneath the door and illuminated clocks. The US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health advises blocking light around curtains and using a draught stopper where hallway lighting enters beneath a door. An eye mask offers a portable solution for renters with limited control over window coverings.
A blackout lining attached to existing curtains may be a practical first purchase. Measure carefully so it covers the window adequately. Before bed, use a dim bedside lamp and switch off bright overhead lighting. Keep the route to the bathroom clear; a dim night light can provide enough visibility for anyone who needs it.
Reduce the interruptions
Traffic, corridor conversations and a television in the next room can disturb sleep. The National Sleep Foundation recommends positioning the bed away from shared walls or street-facing windows where possible. Try moving the headboard to a quieter wall before spending money on equipment, while keeping access around the bed comfortable.
Listen from the pillow to identify the source. A rattling air-conditioning unit may need maintenance, while television noise may require an agreement about volume and timing. Thick curtains soften some sound, although substantial noise through windows or walls may require repairs beyond a tenant’s control.
Mah’s Stanford guidance suggests earplugs or steady background sound when external noise persists. A fan may help mask intermittent disturbances. Try equipment you already own at a comfortable volume before purchasing a sound machine, and judge the result by whether you sleep more comfortably. Individual preferences matter, particularly when two people share a bedroom.
Adjust the warmth
The body’s temperature naturally falls as sleep approaches, and a cool room supports that process. The National Sleep Foundation gives approximately 16–19°C as a general reference range, while acknowledging that preferences vary. Your bedding, sleepwear and comfort should guide any adjustment.
If you regularly wake feeling hot, try removing a heavy bedspread or using a lighter blanket. Change the thermostat gradually and notice how you feel overnight. In an air-conditioned apartment, check whether the duvet is making you overheat or a draught is leaving you uncomfortable.
Keep furniture clear of vents and report unreliable cooling to building maintenance. Separate lightweight covers can give partners more control over warmth without requiring another mattress.
Make bedding comfortable
Bedding deserves attention when you wake with discomfort or spend the night rearranging pillows. Mah recommends choosing products that “keep your spine and neck aligned”. Her guidance emphasises testing comfort and support for your own body, since mattress and pillow requirements differ between sleepers.
Before replacing the mattress, examine your pillow’s condition and whether its height feels comfortable. Notice where discomfort occurs and whether a different position helps. Johns Hopkins sleep neurologist Rachel Salas recommends supportive bedding and experimenting with pillows where appropriate. Persistent pain deserves individual advice.
Wash sheets regularly and clean around the bed. Salas highlights dust and dander as potential sources of allergies that can interfere with sleep. Choose washable bedding you enjoy using and can maintain easily.
Give work somewhere to go
A rented bedroom often doubles as an office or storage space. Salas advises positioning the bed away from visible distractions, including a desk piled with work. “The sleep environment is something that can easily be fixed,” she says.
Close the laptop, gather paperwork into a box and put tomorrow’s clothes together before settling down. A laundry basket and one clear bedside surface can make the room easier to use. Keep a few objects you enjoy seeing, and leave the floor clear. Choose an arrangement you can maintain comfortably each evening.
