St James’ Park doesn’t hand out points. Villa left it on Saturday with a 1-0 win, and the man who settled it was Johan Manzambi, a 21-year-old Swiss international who snubbed Newcastle in July to sign for Villa Park. Unai Emery, never one for gloating, will have counted the three points and glanced at the table.
Emery’s squad looks different now. Villa sold Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for £120m and watched Ollie Watkins leave too, part of roughly £500m in sales across several years to keep the books inside Premier League profit rules and UEFA’s squad cost limits. One summer wiped 489 Premier League appearances out of the dressing room.
Football Insider has now put a price on the damage. Stefan Borson, a former Manchester City financial adviser, told the outlet that Villa’s league form could cancel out their Champions League riches. Emery’s side sit third in the European table after two games and are closing on a £12.1m windfall, but the Premier League tells another story. When the report appeared, Villa were 16th, two points clear of the relegation zone.
Borson values each league place at roughly £3m in prize money. Fourth last season means a deep slide could cost up to £30m, and a seven-place drop alone takes away £21m. He reckons the turnaround is harder after so many summer changes. Opta’s supercomputer is kinder, tipping eighth place and 51 points, yet even that is four places lower than last season and a £12m shortfall.
What Manzambi brings
Villa paid Freiburg £51m for Manzambi, a club record. Money like that demands output. His best weapon is the carry: pick the ball up deep, drive at a back line, drag three defenders out of shape. Balance is excellent, pressing barely bothers him, and he arrives in the box late.
Weaknesses exist. His defensive positioning can drift, the final pass sometimes lacks cleanness, and a 21-year-old’s body has to survive a Premier League winter. Emery loves midfielders who push the ball forward quickly and press in packs, so Manzambi suits the plan. Nicolas Jackson’s arrival adds clinical effectiveness up front.
Can Emery balance lost experience with PSR demands, and does Manzambi justify the pivot?

Emery can balance it only by trusting shape over names. Villa lost leaders, but the structure he drills every day survives changes in personnel better than most. Experienced replacements cost money the club doesn’t have, so he leans on routines: a compact press, quick vertical passes, set-piece patterns rehearsed to the point of boredom. Youth carries risk away from home, and Newcastle showed it carries reward too.
Manzambi justifies the pivot on this evidence. £51m is a heavy label for a 21-year-old, and the winner at St James’ Park came from exactly the sort of player Villa could never have afforded at 28. Resale value matters under profit rules. A young international with rising numbers protects the books rather than straining them.
Borson’s £30m warning is real money, and the cure is simple: points. Every place climbed returns roughly £3m. Emery needs the league table to catch up with the European one, and Jackson’s finishing plus Manzambi’s carrying hand him the tools. Experience will return slowly, through Manzambi’s second and third seasons and through a willingness to keep the young core together rather than cash out at the first big bid.
