Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital by ambulance on Friday after collapsing at the club’s Sabener Strasse training ground, The Athletic reported.
The 40-year-old, who had been suffering from a viral infection for a week, was watching the club’s second team train. Earlier in the day, he had attended a press conference ahead of Sunday’s Bundesliga match against Freiburg.
Bayern said Kompany would undergo “a thorough examination and remain under medical care”. His coaching staff will oversee training and matches until further notice.
“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure his speedy recovery,” Bayern’s board member for sport, Max Eberl, said in a statement.
“Vinnie will receive all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs. His coaching team, in whom we have complete confidence, will take over his duties. Everyone at FC Bayern wishes Vinnie a speedy recovery.”
The infection had prevented Kompany from completing his media duties after Bayern’s 6-1 win over RB Leipzig the previous Saturday. He also missed training on Monday and Tuesday.
Assistants Aaron Danks and Rene Maric handled most of the preparations for Wednesday’s Champions League match against Arsenal, including the pre-match media duties. Kompany returned to lead the afternoon activation session and took his place on the touchline for the 2-2 draw.
Speaking to German newspaper Bild after that match, Kompany acknowledged that he had pushed himself despite being unwell.
“As a coach, you always want to do everything and accomplish what you can,” he said. “I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course I didn’t listen to my body, so at some point it just said: Stop now!”
Kompany has also been nursing a hip injury that has restricted his movement. He spent much of the Leipzig and Arsenal matches on the substitutes’ bench, making only occasional visits to the technical area.
