Based in Geneva, the 47-member council is the UN’s principal intergovernmental body responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide. Members serve three-year terms and are elected by the General Assembly through a secret ballot, with seats allocated among five regional groups.
Nepal previously served on the council during the 2018–2020 and 2021–2023 terms. Its new term will begin on January 1, 2027.
