The Chicago Bears beat the Atlanta Falcons 31-23 on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. This win was not a fluke; the numbers show a clear gap in execution. The Falcons tried to make it interesting, but the Bears simply pulled away when it mattered most.
Bijan Robinson managed only 61 yards on the ground, which is his season low. The defense could not stop the run, and the offense turned the ball over too many times. This loss drops Atlanta to 2-4, leaving them hovering just above the basement of the NFC South. It is a painful reality check for a team that looked so promising just two weeks ago.
The Numbers Do Not Lie
The disparity in possession was stark. The Bears controlled the clock for 40 minutes and 8 seconds while the Falcons had less than 20. Chicago also gained 368 total yards compared to Atlanta’s 257. According to Windy City Gridiron, the Bears converted 52.9 percent of their third downs while the Falcons managed only 25 percent. That is a huge difference in keeping drives alive and controlling the game flow.
The Falcons also committed far fewer penalties, yet it did not matter. Chicago had 12 penalties for 133 yards, while Atlanta had just 4 for 31. Despite the Bears’ discipline issues, they still dominated the stats sheet.
Williams Found His Rhythm
Caleb Williams looked like a different player than the one we saw in previous weeks. Per Sports Illustrated, he finished 30 for 36 for the game with an 111.2 passer rating. He took the check-down when it was there, which helped his completion percentage reach 72.5 percent for the season. His average depth of target was only 3.6 yards, the second-lowest of his career, showing a smart game plan to protect his health.
Head coach Ben Johnson admitted they had to balance winning with resting players for the upcoming Thursday night game. “I mean, you’re trying to thread the needle a little bit,” Johnson said. He noted that if they did not have the short week, they might have played differently. The team also had to bring starters back in after a fumble by Roschon Johnson with 7:21 left in the game, but they still closed it out.
The return of left tackle Ozzy Trapilo was a bright spot for Chicago, even if his stats were modest. He played 17 snaps and told reporters, “It felt good, it was good to be back.” The Falcons defense, meanwhile, is showing cracks with injuries piling up at linebacker and cornerback. This loss highlights how thin the roster is getting on both sides of the ball.
The Falcons now face the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, October 25.
