Seahawks most to blame for mistake-filled loss to 49ers in NFC West classic appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Seattle Seahawks had the defending-champion pedigree and the home crowd. They also had a third-quarter surge that looked ready to deliver a defining NFC West victory. Then the mistakes returned, and the San Francisco 49ers made them pay. Seattle’s 32-29 defeat at Lumen Field was an emotional heavyweight fight. However, it was also a painfully familiar story of self-inflicted damage. Four turnovers helped San Francisco build a 21-13 halftime advantage before the Seahawks briefly seized control with a furious comeback. Yet when the game demanded composure, Seattle blinked. The running backs repeatedly put the football on the ground, Sam Darnold surrendered possession twice, and the secondary could not deliver a decisive stop.
Backfield ball security
The most damaging mistakes came from Seattle’s backfield. Emanuel Wilson and George Holani turned routine possessions into catastrophic giveaways. With Zach Charbonnet unavailable, the Seahawks needed their remaining running backs to protect the football and keep the offense on schedule. Instead, they helped hand San Francisco 14 points at critical moments.
Wilson’s second-quarter fumble, forced by Fred Warner and recovered by Malik Mustapha, gave the 49ers possession inside Seattle’s 20-yard line. Christian McCaffrey needed just one play to turn that opportunity into an 11-yard touchdown run. Then, with seconds remaining before halftime, Holani lost the football near the goal line. San Francisco recovered it in the end zone for a defensive touchdown. Suddenly, the Seahawks faced an eight-point deficit after a half in which their own mistakes had repeatedly put the opposition in scoring position.

The Seahawks eventually generated enough offense to make the game competitive. However, overcoming defensive touchdowns and short-field scores is an exhausting way to win. Wilson and Holani cannot shoulder every ounce of blame, yet ball security is non-negotiable. Seattle cannot realistically pursue another championship if its running backs keep handing opponents free points.
Sam Darnold
Darnold deserves credit for helping Seattle claw back into the contest. That said, his early-game decisions helped create the hole in the first place. The quarterback threw two interceptions to San Francisco cornerback Renardo Green. That included one on the opening possession of each half. Both giveaways interrupted Seattle’s momentum and gave the 49ers opportunities to control the game.
Darnold finished with 195 passing yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. He also absorbed five sacks as San Francisco’s defensive front repeatedly disrupted his timing. Meanwhile, protection problems contributed to the pressure.
To his credit, Darnold responded after halftime. He connected with Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a 16-yard touchdown and helped Seattle take a 26-21 lead in the third quarter. That response showed the Seahawks had enough firepower to challenge San Francisco. Unfortunately, Darnold’s earlier mistakes had already forced Seattle to play from behind. Their late comeback could not erase the damage.
Secondary
Seattle’s defense also deserves significant scrutiny, particularly after San Francisco reclaimed control in the fourth quarter. With the Seahawks leading 26-21, Brock Purdy engineered a 12-play, 74-yard touchdown drive. It finished with a seven-yard scoring pass to Brandin Cooks. Purdy then found Mike Evans for the successful two-point conversion, putting the 49ers ahead 29-26.
Evans was instrumental in the decisive possession. He made difficult catches and stretched Seattle’s coverage. Purdy finished with 189 passing yards and two touchdown passes. Those numbers hardly suggest an unstoppable aerial assault. Yet San Francisco executed when it mattered, while Seattle failed to make the critical stop.
The Seahawks briefly tied the game with Jason Myers’ fifth field goal. The defense, though, could not keep the 49ers out of range on the ensuing possession. Eddy Piñeiro converted a 44-yard field goal with approximately two minutes remaining to restore San Francisco’s lead. Seattle had another opportunity to answer, but the defense had already surrendered the two drives that ultimately decided the contest.
HC Mike Macdonald
Ultimately, head coach Mike Macdonald must ensure these mistakes do not become a defining feature of Seattle’s season. Offensive coordinator Brian Fleury needs to reinforce ball security and help Darnold manage pressure. The defense must find ways to close out games after building a lead.
Seattle did plenty right to rally from its halftime deficit. Still, that should not obscure the fundamental failures that made the comeback necessary in the first place. The 49ers improved to 5-0, while the Seahawks fell to 3-2. Seattle missed a chance to make an early divisional statement.
