JUBA, October 12, 2026 — Former Undersecretary in the Ministry of Culture, Museums and National Heritage, Amer Madol Majak, who was relieved of her position weeks after publicly criticizing government financial procedures over civil servants’ conditions, has declared her intention to contest for a seat in the National Legislative Assembly representing Gogrial West Constituency No. 6 on the ruling SPLM ticket.
Amer attracted national attention in June after accusing the Ministry of Finance and Planning, the Bank of South Sudan and the Office of the President of engaging in what she described as selective prioritization of government payments, while civil servants continued to face salary arrears.
Speaking at a public event, she questioned why some government payments appeared to receive priority while ministries struggled to access funds for approved budgets and public servants went without their salaries.
Amer also alleged that certain payment arrangements were being handled through special channels linked to the Office of the President, raising concerns about transparency and fairness in the management of public finances.
Her remarks prompted responses from the government institutions she had criticized. The Ministry of Finance and Planning disputed her allegations, while the Ministry of Culture, Museums and National Heritage distanced itself from her statements, saying they did not represent the ministry’s official position.
In early July, President Salva Kiir Mayardit relieved Amer of her position as undersecretary and appointed Julia Ater Wantok as her replacement. However, the official announcement of the changes did not explicitly link Amer’s removal to her earlier criticism of government financial procedures.
Three months after her removal, Amer has now announced her intention to enter electoral politics.
In a Facebook post, she appealed to members of Gogrial West Constituency No. 6, expressing her desire to represent them in the National Legislative Assembly.
She thanked community members and those who attended the gathering where she announced her political ambition, adding that an opportunity to discuss her vision for Gogrial West would come later.
Amer has yet to publicly outline her policy priorities for the constituency.
Her declaration comes as the ruling party prepares for its internal nomination process ahead of the next elections.
