To mark the 150th anniversary of Teodors Zaļkalns, the founder of Latvian sculpture., Latvian Postal Service will issue a stamp and an envelope dedicated to him. The new philatelic issue will be available from 16 October.
The majority of Teodors Zaļkalns’ extensive creative legacy – sculptures, sketches, photographs, manuscripts and memorabilia – is held at the Latvian National Museum of Art.
The collaboration between “Latvijas Pasts” and the Latvian National Museum of Art on the “Outstanding Latvian Artists” stamp series has been ongoing since 2017.
“I am truly delighted that, through artist Lilija Dinere’s interpretation, Latvia’s artistic heritage is becoming accessible to a wide international audience. Each stamp is a small cultural ambassador which, together with the mail it accompanies, travels across borders and tells the world the story of Latvia’s most outstanding artists,” emphasised Iveta Derkusova, Director of the Latvian National Museum of Art.
The cancellation of the new philatelic issue will take place at the “Elizabete” Post Office Customer Centre (41/43 Elizabetes Street, Riga) on 16 October from 9.00 to 18.00. There will be 7,000 copies of the stamps available and 500 envelopes.
