The Special Response Battalion (SRB) has detained a teenager described as a gang leader in Cumilla's Lalmai after a video of him displaying weapons went viral on social media.
The arrestee, identified as Asif, was detained yesterday (22 October) in the Ichhapur area of Belghar Union, with SRB saying he had been making locally manufactured weapons and pipe guns at his home.
According to SRB, it launched an investigation after a video showing weapons being displayed circulated on social media. Intelligence gathered during the inquiry suggested that Asif was involved in making locally manufactured weapons and pipe guns at home.
Major Sadman Ibne Alam, company commander of SRB-11 CPC-2, said Asif used to display various locally made weapons on social media.
"After this came to our attention, we gathered information through intelligence activities and conducted a raid this evening, arresting a young man named Asif and recovering a large quantity of locally made weapons," he said.
An SRB team subsequently raided the house and detained him, the officer added.
The force recovered 16 machetes, knives and cleavers of various sizes, two airguns, a box of cartridges, a drill machine, a cutting machine and a samurai sword, according to the officer.
