Nigeria vs Puerto Rico Preview: Flamingos target first win at 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria’s Flamingos will be desperate to get their 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign back on track when they take on Puerto Rico in their second Group B fixture in Morocco on Tuesday, 20 October.

Head coach Akeem Busari’s side have little room for another slip-up after opening their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland, while Puerto Rico also enter the encounter under pressure following a heavy 6-0 loss to Korea DPR.

With both teams seeking their first points of the tournament, Tuesday’s clash gives Nigeria a chance to respond to their opening setback and strengthen their chances of reaching the Round of 16.

For the Flamingos, the challenge is clear: turn their attacking promise into goals, eliminate costly mistakes and deliver a performance that reflects their ambition on the world stage.

Flamingos seek redemption after Poland defeat

Nigeria will enter the encounter knowing their opening defeat to Poland exposed areas that must improve if they want to make a deep run in Morocco.

Despite creating chances to trouble the European side, the Flamingos struggled to make their attacking efforts count, allowing Poland to build a two-goal lead before mounting a late response.

Wiktoria Skrzypczak broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 33rd minute before Natalia Skrok doubled Poland’s lead in the 65th minute.

Nigeria eventually found a breakthrough in the 79th minute through Oluebube Umejiaku, who finished off a promising attacking move initiated by substitute Kanyinsola Yusuf.

However, the late goal proved insufficient to rescue a point, leaving Busari’s team with the task of recovering quickly ahead of their second group outing.

Against Puerto Rico, the Flamingos must show greater composure in the final third and more urgency when opportunities arise. Their ability to convert chances could prove decisive against an opponent equally determined to recover from an opening-day defeat.

Defensively, Nigeria will also need to stay disciplined and avoid giving Puerto Rico chances to build momentum.

Puerto Rico seek response after historic World Cup debut

While Nigeria look to recover from disappointment, Puerto Rico will aim to put their difficult opening performance behind them and make history with their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory.

The tournament in Morocco represents Puerto Rico’s maiden appearance at a FIFA World Cup at any level, marking a significant milestone for the island nation’s women’s football programme.

Puerto Rico booked their place at the tournament after finishing as the best-ranked runner-up in the final round of the 2026 Concacaf Women’s U-17 Qualifiers.

Their qualification campaign featured two wins and one loss, with impressive victories over Haiti and Bermuda that secured their historic ticket to Morocco.

They defeated Haiti 3-1 before recording a commanding 9-0 victory over Bermuda. Giselle Falcón played an important role in those results, scoring a penalty against Haiti and finding the net twice against Bermuda.

However, the step up to the global stage proved challenging in their opening fixture against Korea DPR, who won convincingly 6-0.

Yu Jong Hyang and Kim Won Sim both scored twice as the Asian side underlined their attacking quality, leaving Puerto Rico with plenty to consider ahead of Tuesday’s encounter.

Puerto Rico will need a significant improvement in defensive organisation to contain Nigeria’s attacking players. At the same time, they must find a way to threaten the Flamingos rather than spend long periods absorbing pressure.

Despite their opening defeat, the tournament debutants will be motivated by the prospect of securing their first points at a FIFA World Cup.

What Nigeria must get right against Puerto Rico

For the Flamingos, Tuesday’s encounter is about more than simply recovering from their defeat to Poland. It is an opportunity to demonstrate resilience, improve their execution and keep their knockout-stage ambitions firmly on course.

Nigeria showed against Poland that they could create chances, but their inability to convert them ultimately contributed to their defeat. Against Puerto Rico, they must be more clinical in front of goal and avoid allowing frustration to creep into their performance if an early breakthrough proves difficult.

Busari’s players will also need to strike the right balance between attacking intent and defensive discipline. Puerto Rico’s 6-0 defeat to Korea DPR may suggest vulnerability, but Nigeria cannot afford to approach the contest with complacency.

With both sides seeking a response, the team that settles in quicker and makes better use of its opportunities could gain the decisive edge.

Korea DPR’s emphatic opening victory has already given them an early advantage in Group B, increasing the importance of the remaining fixtures for the other teams.

Under the tournament format, the top two teams in each group qualify automatically for the Round of 16, while the four best third-placed teams across the six groups also advance to the knockout stage.

That means Nigeria must begin collecting points if they are to avoid leaving their qualification hopes to the uncertainty of the third-placed rankings.

Flamingos face crucial test of character

The meeting with Puerto Rico offers Nigeria an immediate chance to respond to their opening disappointment, but the Flamingos must back their ambition with a more convincing display.

A win would provide a timely confidence boost and put them in a stronger position ahead of their remaining Group B fixture. Another disappointing result, however, would leave them facing a much more difficult route to the Round of 16.

Puerto Rico are equally motivated to secure their first points after a bruising introduction to the tournament, setting up a contest between two teams with something to prove.

For Busari and his players, the priority will be to show that the defeat to Poland was a setback rather than a sign of what is to come.

The Flamingos now have a chance to deliver the response their campaign demands, with their finishing, discipline, and mentality likely to determine whether they can secure their first victory at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
