Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, has mourned the death of its Leader Emeritus and Patriarch, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, describing him as a respected elder statesman and custodian of Yoruba values.
The organisation announced his passing in a statement dated Wednesday, October 21, 2026, signed by its leader, HRH Oba Oladipo Olaitan, and Secretary-General, Alade Rotimi-John.
Afenifere said Fasoranti would be remembered for his unwavering commitment to its founding ideals of justice, fairness, equity, equality, democracy and a life of abundance for all.
It described his life as an example of selfless service to his community in Akure, Ondo State, Yorubaland and Nigeria.
The organisation said the late elder statesman devoted much of his life to the pursuit of a just, equitable and progressive Nigeria, adding that his belief in democratic governance, social justice and the welfare of the people made him a prominent voice in the struggle for a fair and accountable society.
According to Afenifere, Fasoranti was among the foremost surviving representatives of Nigeria’s pre-independence political generation, having witnessed the evolution of the Nigerian state and assessed successive governments against the aspirations of the country’s founding generation.
It noted that through press statements, interviews and public interventions, he consistently expressed his convictions on Nigeria’s development, democratic journey and unfinished national aspirations.
The organisation said his contributions constituted a valuable body of thought that would continue to guide present and future generations.
Afenifere described his death as a monumental loss, saying he left behind a legacy of principled leadership, steadfast service and commitment to the ideals he cherished.
It expressed pride in his contributions and the example he set for generations of Yoruba people and Nigerians.
The organisation extended its condolences to his immediate family, the people of Akure, the Ondo State Government and people, members of Afenifere worldwide and Nigerians who drew inspiration from his life and convictions.
It prayed that God would grant the deceased eternal life and a place of honour in His heavenly kingdom.
“May his soul rest in perfect peace,” the statement added.
