The match between Vaine Moana and Tonga’s Women team was a spectacular and entertaining international that featured momentum swings, strong running and several outstanding long-range tries.
Vaine Moana faced Tonga in a stand-alone fixture at St Marys Leagues Stadium in Sydney on Friday (CI Time) where they (Cook Islands) were defeated 36-20.
Cook Islands were excellent in capitalising on Tonga's early errors.
“Their ability to transition quickly from defense into attack resulted in two long-range tries and helped establish a commanding 16–0 advantage.”
However, Tonga's response was impressive. From 20–4 down late in the first half, they scored 32 of the final 36 points of the match.
The major turning point came immediately after half time.
“Tonga's powerful carries and ability to continually generate meters placed the Cook Islands defense under sustained pressure. Cook Islands struggled to exit their own end through the opening stages of the second half, with errors and penalties compounding the workload on their defensive line.”
Tonga's decision to continue attacking rather than take a penalty goal at 20-all demonstrated confidence in the momentum they had generated.
“That pressure eventually produced China Polata's second try and their first lead of the match.
“Cook Islands showed resilience to respond and level the match at 24-all, setting up an excellent final 18 minutes.”
“However, Tonga's long-range combination between Martha Mataele and Namee Gesa proved decisive before Kalosipani Hopoate's late try secured the result.”
from an officiating perspective, Matthew Galvin, Bailey Clark and Logan Neilsen managed a fast, physical and entertaining international played in hot conditions.
“The match also marked the first occasion the Match Officials wore the new APRL Officiating uniform. The match contained several periods of sustained goal-line pressure, multiple long-range transitions and significant momentum changes.
“The key reportable incident occurred early in the second half, with Cook Islands #1 Kiana Takairangi placed on report for a possible hip-drop tackle.”
