Zelensky urges US pressure as Russian strikes continue despite ceasefire announcement
The nationwide attacks followed US President Donald Trump’s announcement on Sunday, Oct. 11, that Ukraine and Russia had agreed to an energy ceasefire – a claim neither government had publicly confirmed.
During his evening address Monday, President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned Russia’s continuing strikes and urged Washington to act decisively.
“It is Russia that continues these brutal strikes. It is Russia that is prolonging the war. Even now, in response to the American proposal, it is sending Shahed drones,” Zelensky said.
“We hope the United States will recognize these signals from Russia and act decisively. Strength is needed to force Russia to end this war,” he added.
Zelensky said Ukraine was prepared to suspend long-range attacks on Russian oil refineries and export facilities if Moscow stopped targeting Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
But Russia’s continued strikes raised questions about whether the Kremlin intended to observe any reciprocal ceasefire.
The attacks also came amid controversy over Washington’s decision to temporarily ease restrictions on Russian diesel exports, despite Ukraine’s calls for stronger economic pressure on Moscow.
