The asset manager has moved to withdraw its filing for a fund built around Lido's staked ETH product.
VanEck has asked regulators to withdraw its application for a Lido staked Ether exchange-traded fund, according to reports from Cointelegraph and crypto.news published on October 15, 2026. The filing had proposed a fund structured around stETH, the liquid staking token issued by Lido Finance.
Lido is the largest liquid staking protocol built on Ethereum. It allows users to stake ETH and receive stETH in return, a token that represents the staked position while remaining tradable. Liquid staking tokens like stETH have become a core building block of decentralized finance, used as collateral and traded across exchanges.
VanEck is one of several major asset managers that have pushed into crypto-linked exchange-traded products in recent years. The firm already offers spot Bitcoin and spot Ether funds in the United States. A Lido-based staked Ether product would have extended that lineup into a newer and less tested category tied directly to staking yield.
Neither Cointelegraph nor crypto.news detailed the specific reason behind the withdrawal. Applications for crypto exchange-traded products are routinely amended, delayed, or pulled as issuers respond to regulatory feedback, market conditions, or internal strategy shifts. A withdrawal does not necessarily rule out a future refiling.
Staking-linked ETFs sit in a more complicated regulatory position than plain spot crypto funds. Regulators have scrutinized how staking rewards should be classified, how custody of staked assets should work, and whether yield-bearing crypto products fit existing securities frameworks. Those questions have slowed approval timelines for several staking-related filings across the industry.
The withdrawal comes as asset managers continue testing which crypto product structures regulators will accept. Spot Bitcoin and spot Ether funds cleared that bar after lengthy review processes. Products built on liquid staking tokens, which carry additional layers of smart contract and protocol risk, represent a newer test case still working through regulatory channels.
Market Impact
The withdrawal removes one pending entrant from the still-developing market for staking-linked exchange-traded products. It does not directly affect existing spot Bitcoin or Ether funds, which operate under a separate regulatory framework already approved by regulators.
For Lido and the broader liquid staking sector, the episode underscores that institutional products built around stETH remain in an early and uncertain phase. Other issuers with similar filings may face comparable regulatory questions before any staking-based ETF reaches the market.
VanEck's withdrawal highlights the continued regulatory uncertainty surrounding staking-based crypto investment products, even as spot Bitcoin and Ether funds have already gained approval.
Frequently Asked Questions
What did VanEck withdraw?
VanEck sought to withdraw its application for an exchange-traded fund built around Lido's staked Ether token, stETH, according to Cointelegraph and crypto.news.
Why is this different from existing Ether ETFs?
Existing spot Ether ETFs hold unstaked ETH. The withdrawn filing would have involved staked ETH through Lido's liquid staking token, which carries additional regulatory and protocol-level questions.
Was a reason given for the withdrawal?
Neither report cited a specific reason. Issuers commonly withdraw filings in response to regulatory feedback, market conditions, or internal strategy changes.
Does this affect VanEck's other crypto ETFs?
No. VanEck's existing spot Bitcoin and spot Ether funds operate separately and are not affected by this withdrawal.
