Team Nigeria is set to depart for Nairobi, Kenya, on Tuesday, October 13, for the inaugural African Boxing Elite Championships scheduled to hold from October 15 to 28, 2026.
The Nigerian contingent will feature 10 boxers competing in five male and five female weight categories as the country prepares to test its strength against some of Africa’s leading boxing talents at the continental competition.
According to a statement issued on Monday by Kola Daniel, Special Adviser on Media to the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), the delegation comprises 19 members, including the athletes and other officials. Blueprint reports
The team is expected to arrive in Nairobi on Wednesday, October 14, a day before the commencement of the championship, allowing the boxers time to settle in and prepare for the competition.
The inaugural event represents an opportunity for Nigeria to demonstrate its depth in elite boxing, assess the progress of its athletes against continental opposition and strengthen the country’s presence in international amateur boxing.
The NSC expressed confidence in the Nigerian contingent and urged the athletes to represent the country with discipline, determination and a commitment to excellence.
Nigeria targets strong showing in Nairobi
The participation of 10 Nigerian boxers across the men’s and women’s categories reflects the country’s intention to compete across different weight divisions at the championship.
For the athletes, the competition will provide an opportunity to measure their technical abilities, tactical preparation and physical readiness against opponents from other African countries.
The championships are also expected to offer valuable international exposure, particularly for boxers seeking to establish themselves at the elite level and improve their competitiveness in future continental and global competitions.
Nigeria has a history of producing boxers who have represented the country at major international events, including the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and African championships.
The Nairobi competition will provide another opportunity for the country’s boxing community to assess its current crop of athletes and identify areas requiring further investment, technical development and preparation.
However, the extent of Nigeria’s success will depend on the performances of the individual boxers, the quality of the opposition and their ability to translate their preparations into results in the ring.
19-member contingent to arrive ahead of opening
The Nigerian delegation comprises 19 members, with the team scheduled to leave the country on Tuesday and arrive in Kenya the following day.
The travel schedule places the contingent in Nairobi ahead of the October 15 opening of the championships.
The early arrival is expected to give the athletes and officials time to prepare for the demands of the competition, including the event’s administrative and technical requirements.
With participation spread across five male and five female weight categories, Nigeria will have representation in both divisions as the boxers seek to make their mark at the inaugural edition.
The statement, however, did not disclose the names of the 10 boxers, their respective weight categories or the full composition of the 19-member delegation.
Further details about the athletes and their competition schedules would provide a clearer picture of Nigeria’s medal prospects and the match-ups awaiting the team in Nairobi.
NSC backs athletes for continental challenge
The National Sports Commission has expressed its support for the team, wishing the athletes a successful outing at the championships.
In the statement signed by Daniel, the commission urged the boxers to uphold Nigeria’s reputation for competitiveness, discipline and excellence throughout the competition.
The commission’s message highlights the importance of representing the country responsibly while competing against athletes from across the continent.
Beyond the immediate results, the championship offers an opportunity for the NSC and relevant boxing administrators to evaluate the performance of Nigeria’s elite boxers in an international setting.
Such competitions can help identify strengths, expose technical gaps and inform preparations for future assignments.
The performance of the Nigerian team could also contribute to broader efforts to sustain interest in boxing, strengthen athlete development and create more opportunities for Nigerian boxers to compete at the highest level.
Championship offers platform for African boxing
The inaugural African Boxing Elite Championships, scheduled to run from October 15 to 28 in Nairobi, will bring together elite boxers from across Africa.
For Nigeria, the event represents an opportunity to compete for continental honours while gaining experience against a wider range of opponents.
The inclusion of male and female athletes in the Nigerian delegation also ensures that both divisions will be represented as the country pursues its objectives at the competition.
As the team prepares to depart, attention will turn to the boxers’ performances once the championships begin and their ability to convert the opportunity into medals and valuable international experience.
The National Sports Commission said it wished the contingent success as it prepares to fly Nigeria’s flag in Kenya.
