A police sub-inspector (SI) and a pedestrian were killed after a speeding covered van hit a police patrol team in Kaliganj, Gazipur, early today (23 October).
The accident occurred in front of Kaliganj Government Labour College on the Tongi-Kaliganj Regional Highway, leaving another SI and a police constable seriously injured.
The deceased were SI Mizanur Rahman, 30, of Kaliganj Police Station, and Rafiq Islam, 45. The injured were identified as SI Jabed Omar, 28, and Constable Rabbi, 28.
Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Zaker Hossain said a speeding-covered van hit the police patrol team during a routine patrol.
He said the injured were rescued and taken to hospital immediately after the accident, but an SI and a pedestrian later died.
Police are trying to identify the covered van and arrest its driver, who fled the scene after the accident, the OC added.
According to police and local sources, a team led by SI Mizanur was conducting a routine patrol in the Kaliganj Police Station area in the early hours of the day.
Mizanur, Jabed, and Constable Rabbi around 3:30am stopped their police vehicle in front of Kaliganj Government Labour College and were talking to local resident Rafiq Molla beside the road.
At that time, a covered van heading towards Ghorashal hit them and fled the scene. The van dragged Mizanur for nearly 200 metres.
Police personnel from Kaliganj Police Station rushed to the scene after receiving information about the accident, rescued the injured, and took them to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex at 3:50am.
The doctor declared Rafiq dead at the health complex.
Mizanur and Jabed were subsequently sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
Mizanur died while undergoing treatment at around 6:45am, while Jabed remains under treatment.
Meanwhile, Constable Rabbi is receiving treatment at Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital.
