Shillong, Oct 16: Senior UDP legislator Paul Lyngdoh has cautioned against the rising trend of hate-driven content on social media in the wake of viral videos showing people from Meghalaya and Assam urinating in each other’s territory.
Asked if government intervention is needed as the online spat threatens to turn ugly, Lyngdoh said the phenomenon reflects what he had earlier termed in the Assembly as “digital intox”.
“In this age, what I had called in the House itself, the digital intox that is taking place. People want to grab headlines, want to be seen as news-makers. It’s not just here, worldwide the trend is people try to grab eyeballs through hate campaigns, hate speeches and stuff like that,” Lyngdoh said.
He said such acts should not be given undue publicity when both states are making efforts to strengthen cooperation.
“There is now communication between the two state governments. Meghalaya-owned cars have been given space within Guwahati Airport, likewise we have given space to vehicles from Assam. These are positive developments that you should concentrate on rather than a person peeing on a street becoming a news-maker,” he said.
On concerns that such videos defame Meghalaya and call for boycotting the state as a tourist destination, Lyngdoh said, “It is a very unhealthy trend.”
“The only way out is that we build bridges of trust. If all stakeholders from Assam and Meghalaya put their heads together and understand that they stand to gain more if they cooperate rather than confront each other, then only we can minimise such instances,” he added.
