Today’s Focus
Latin America opens Wednesday with its eyes on Washington. US consumer prices for September are due at 09:30 BRT, and a hot reading would lift Treasury yields and the dollar.
Higher yields make it harder for Latin American central banks to keep cutting rates. They also tend to pull money out of emerging-market stocks and currencies, which is why Tuesday’s weakness in the real, peso and Chilean peso matters.
Oil adds a second pull. The US Oil Fund rose 1.36% on Tuesday, which lifts revenues for exporters such as Brazil’s Petrobras and Colombia’s Ecopetrol but raises fuel and transport costs for importers.
At home, Brazil publishes its August services survey at 09:00 BRT and October business confidence at 11:00 BRT.
What matters today. The US inflation print will decide whether the region’s risk assets can hold their recent footing or give back more ground.

01 The overnight tape in one read
The global tape is a story of oil pressure and inflation nerves. Oil rose again on Tuesday, with the US Oil Fund (USO) up 1.36% to US$153.09, which forces every importer in Latin America to recalculate its cost base.
Asian markets were split on Tuesday. Japan’s Nikkei fell 1.82% and South Korea’s Kospi dropped 5.46%, a sharp move that suggests regional tech and export sentiment is wobbling.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng added about 0.3% and Shanghai gained 0.1%, showing that not every corner of Asia is running from risk. On Wall Street, the S&P 500 ended almost flat at 7,805.
Assessment — Inflation anxiety is the binding constraint MEDIUM
The evidence points to a market that wants to stay constructive on Latin America but is being pulled back by global inflation worries and firmer oil. The variable to watch is the US 10-year yield, which closed Tuesday at 5.222%, so any move higher after the CPI release would tighten the screws on foreign flows into the region.
02 The board before the open
| Instrument | Level | Change | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| US Oil Fund (USO) | US$153.09 | +1.36% | Oil proxy, feeds inflation fears |
| US 10Y yield | 5.222% | −0.29% | Slightly lower, but still near 5.2% |
| Dollar index | 102.13 | −0.45% | Softer, but Latin American currencies still weakened |
| Gold | US$4,155/oz | −0.37% | Safe haven is not catching a bid |
The board shows an inflation-trade pattern: energy prices high, bond yields elevated, and a softer dollar that gave Latin American currencies little relief.
Gold’s decline is notable. The metal is not acting as a hedge, which suggests investors are focused on rates rather than on safety.

The session read
The Ibovespa eased 1.04%, with breadth positive — 3 of 5 names higher. COLCAP led, while BVL PERÚ lagged.
03 What the data shows — Petrobras leads turnover while the banks slip
| Stock | Move | Turnover | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| PETR4 | +1.52% | R$2,170m (about US$432m) | The only one of the six in the green |
| VALE3 | −1.09% | R$1,538m (about US$306m) | Iron-ore giant, tied to China’s mixed session |
| B3SA3 | −2.53% | R$1,465m (about US$291m) | Exchange operator, a liquidity bellwether |
| ITUB4 | −1.57% | R$1,443m (about US$287m) | Bank heavyweight, rate-sensitive |
| BPAC11 | −1.15% | R$1,413m (about US$281m) | BTG Pactual, high-beta financial |
| BBDC4 | −0.97% | R$1,403m (about US$279m) | Bradesco, another bank in the turnover mix |
The B3 scan shows where Brazilian money traded on Tuesday. Petrobras’s preferred shares led turnover at R$2.17 billion (about US$432 million at 5.0273), rising as oil stayed firm.
The four largest financial names all fell, with the exchange operator B3 itself down 2.53%. Financials are the most liquid way for foreign investors to express a view on Brazilian rates and the Selic path.
04 Brazil and the currencies
Brazil opens with the real under pressure and the Ibovespa coming off a session that underperformed Wall Street. The real weakened 0.81% to 5.0273 per dollar and the Ibovespa fell 1.04% while the S&P 500 was almost flat.
Two Brazilian releases come before lunchtime. The August services survey lands at 09:00 BRT, and October business confidence at 11:00 BRT with a forecast of 44.0 against 44.9 before.
The Selic, Brazil’s benchmark rate, is the key transmission channel. Polymarket gives a 25 basis-point cut 89.5% for the November decision.
Across the region, the Mexican peso (USD/MXN 18.3705, +0.59%), the Chilean peso (982.5, +0.58%) and the real weakened on Tuesday. The Colombian peso firmed 0.25% to 3,195 and the Argentine peso 0.23% to 1,513, both per dollar.
05 The regional setup
| Index | Country | Change |
|---|---|---|
| COLCAP | Colombia | n/a |
| Merval | Argentina | n/a |
| IPC | Mexico | +0.60% |
| IPSA | Chile | −0.21% |
| Ibovespa | Brazil | −1.04% |
The regional board shows a split mood. Mexico’s IPC added 0.60%, while Chile’s IPSA slipped 0.21% and Brazil’s Ibovespa fell 1.04%.
Colombia’s COLCAP and Argentina’s Merval closes are not available to us from a verified source this morning, so we leave them out. Argentina also published September inflation on Tuesday: 1.9% for the month, in line with forecasts and up from 1.7% in August, with the annual rate at 33.4%.
Elsewhere, Uruguay’s industrial production grew 4.8% in August against a forecast of 6% and a previous 4.2%. Paraguay’s trade balance showed a September deficit of US$118.16 million against a forecast deficit of US$100 million.
06 The technical picture
The Ibovespa closed Tuesday 1.04% below Friday’s 209,067, which was its highest close in the past 12 months. That proximity to the peak is both a comfort and a risk.
A failure to break higher while oil and US yields stay elevated would leave the index vulnerable to profit-taking, especially in the heavily traded banks.
Mexico’s IPC, at 67,147, is about 6.2% below its February high of 71,601, which gives it more room to run if US data comes in soft. The real is about 10% stronger than at its December peak for the dollar of 5.59, so the broad trend still favours the Brazilian currency.
07 What to watch
- US consumer prices, 09:30 BRT: Forecast 3.6% a year (previous 3.4%) and 0.6% on the month (previous 0.4%); a hot reading would push yields higher and pressure Latin American currencies
- Brazil services survey, 09:00 BRT: It moves rate-cut expectations and the real, with the previous year-on-year reading at 0.9%
- Brazil business confidence, 11:00 BRT: A forecast of 44.0 against 44.9 would point to more cautious companies
- Consumer sentiment and core inflation, 12:00 BRT: Thomson Reuters Ipsos consumer sentiment is due for Brazil (previous 52.17), Mexico (50.84) and Argentina (37.85), alongside the Cleveland Fed’s CPI measure (previous 0.2%); core inflation is forecast at 2.5% a year
- Beige Book, 15:00 BRT: The Federal Reserve’s regional survey of the US economy lands in the afternoon and may shift views on rates
What Prediction Markets Say
- Federal Reserve, October meeting: no change 80.5%, 25 bp increase 19.5% (Polymarket, US$35 million traded)
- Selic, November decision: 25 bp cut 89.5% (Polymarket, US$56,879 traded)
- Brazil presidential election: Flávio Bolsonaro 86.0%, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva 14.5% (Polymarket, US$181 million traded)
Prices are bets, not polls, and were read overnight on 13 October. Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does oil matter so much for Latin America today?
Higher oil prices raise fuel and transport costs across the region, which pushes up inflation. They also raise revenue for exporters such as Brazil and Colombia.
What is the Ibovespa?
It is Brazil’s main stock index, tracking the largest and most traded companies on the B3 exchange in São Paulo.
Why are US inflation numbers so important for Latin American stocks?
US inflation data moves US Treasury yields and the dollar. Higher yields make US assets more attractive, pulling money away from emerging markets like Brazil and Mexico.
Which Latin American country is most exposed to oil today?
Colombia is a clear case because its stock index and peso respond to oil, but Brazil’s Petrobras is the largest single company exposed to the move.
