Ripple's chief technology officer says tokenization and artificial intelligence could reshape decentralized finance, with retail opportunities emerging on the XRP Ledger.
Ripple's chief technology officer, David Schwartz, has outlined a bullish view on the future of decentralized finance. He expects the sector to undergo a major transformation by 2027. His comments, reported across multiple crypto outlets this week, center on two forces he considers central to that shift: tokenization and artificial intelligence.
Schwartz is one of the most recognized technical voices in the crypto industry. He co-founded Ripple and has overseen the development of its payments infrastructure for years. When he comments on the trajectory of DeFi, his remarks tend to carry weight given his long tenure building blockchain systems.
According to reporting from CoinTurk News, Schwartz believes tokenization will play a defining role in the next phase of decentralized finance. Tokenization refers to the process of representing real-world assets, such as bonds, equities, or real estate, as digital tokens on a blockchain. Proponents argue this could unlock liquidity for traditionally illiquid assets and make them tradable around the clock.
Artificial intelligence is the second pillar of Schwartz's thesis. AI tools are increasingly used across crypto markets for trading automation, risk analysis, and smart contract auditing. Schwartz reportedly sees AI combining with tokenized assets to create new categories of financial products within DeFi protocols.
Separately, crypto.news reported that Schwartz also sees growing retail opportunities for decentralized finance built on the XRP Ledger. The XRP Ledger is Ripple's underlying blockchain network, known primarily for cross-border payment settlement. Expanding its use case into retail-facing DeFi applications would mark a notable broadening of its role beyond institutional payment rails.
The timing of these comments is notable. DeFi has faced scrutiny in recent years over security vulnerabilities, regulatory uncertainty, and volatile liquidity conditions. A prediction of a major breakthrough from a figure like Schwartz suggests renewed confidence that the sector's infrastructure is maturing. Tokenization in particular has drawn interest from traditional finance institutions exploring blockchain-based settlement and asset issuance.
Schwartz's remarks did not include specific product announcements or timelines beyond the general 2027 horizon he referenced. No financial figures, partnership details, or regulatory filings were cited alongside his comments in the available reporting.
Market Impact
If tokenization and AI integration accelerate as Schwartz suggests, DeFi protocols could see renewed developer activity and institutional interest over the coming two years. Networks positioned to support tokenized real-world assets, including the XRP Ledger, may benefit from increased attention as the narrative around asset tokenization gains traction industry-wide.
However, the comments reported here represent forward-looking commentary rather than confirmed product launches or measurable market data. Readers should treat the 2027 timeline as a stated expectation from one executive rather than an industry-wide consensus or guaranteed outcome.
Schwartz's comments add to a broader industry conversation about where decentralized finance is headed next. Whether tokenization and AI deliver the breakthrough he describes will depend on execution, regulation, and adoption over the coming years.
