The United States has imposed restrictions on the entry of Zambian nationals into the country under a presidential proclamation that affects immigrant visas and several categories of non-immigrant visas.
The restrictions, which took effect since January 1, 2026 affect Zambian nationals seeking to enter the United States on B-1, B-2, B-1/B-2, F, M and J visas, according to Zambia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday, the ministry said the affected visa categories generally cover business and tourism, academic studies, vocational studies and exchange visitor programmes.
The ministry said the proclamation also provided for reduced validity periods, to the extent permitted by law, for other non-immigrant visas issued to Zambian nationals.
It said the restrictions were subject to specified exceptions.
“These include lawful permanent residents of the United States, dual nationals travelling on passports issued by countries not covered by the restrictions, and certain categories of official and diplomatic travellers,” the statement said.
The ministry added that other limited exceptions and case-by-case waivers could apply under the terms of the proclamation.
It urged Zambians planning to travel to the United States to familiarise themselves with the requirements and seek clarification from the US Embassy in Zambia about their individual circumstances before making travel arrangements or paying visa fees.
“The Ministry wishes to assure the public that it will continue to engage the relevant authorities through appropriate diplomatic channels in the interest of Zambian citizens,” the statement said.
