Speaking at Migwena Grounds in Bondo, Siaya County, Winnie announced that she would align herself with the Linda Mwananchi opposition faction associated with current Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
During her address, Winnie appeared to criticise President William Ruto’s administration, raising concerns about the high cost of living and the economic challenges facing Kenyans.
Winnie’s entry into the Nairobi Senate race could put her on a collision course with Lang’ata MP Felix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, who has also declared interest in the seat.
Jalang’o has received backing from sections of ODM and President Ruto’s camp under the broad-based political arrangement, potentially setting up a contest between candidates associated with opposing political camps.
However, it remains unclear who will ultimately emerge as the Linda Mwananchi faction’s preferred candidate for the Nairobi Senate seat. Other figures who have previously expressed interest include former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president Faith Odhiambo.
