All access to Saddletowne Circle is currently closed off, and the public is asked to avoid the area.
Sean Stamboltas, who lives nearby, said he was walking to work when he saw smoke from the crash.
“When I got to the corner, a natural gas Calgary Transit bus was fully engulfed. A second standard bus was behind it with the front end crumpled and on fire as well,” he said.
Police arrived shortly afterward and asked bystanders to leave the area due to an explosion hazard, Stamboltas said, adding that another vehicle appeared to have been involved in a separate crash across the street.
“It was a little bit of chaos,” he said. “When I arrived, vehicles were backing up down the street and police were just showing up to close the road down.”
At an unrelated press conference Thursday afternoon, Calgary Transit director Sharon Fleming confirmed that two buses were involved in the collision, but said the extent of the resulting injuries is still unconfirmed.
“Our priority is the safety and care of the passengers and operators involved in the collision, and our sympathies are with those affected by this incident,” Fleming said.
“Calgary Police Service is currently investigating the matter, and Calgary Transit will also investigate. As soon as we are able to determine the cause and understand what safety measures we may need to implement in the future.”
