A BREAKTHROUGH quarterfinal ticket in the Asian swing is up for Alexandra “Alex” Eala’s taking.
Slightly righting the ship after a bumpy start in her home continent, Ms. Eala shoots for a Last 8 seat against Diana Shnaider of Russia in the WTA 500 Ningbo Open at the Yinzhou International Tennis Center in China.
It’s a chance to see a rainbow for Ms. Eala, WTA No. 20, after a series of stumbles that dragged her down two spots in the world rankings before an emphatic first-round showing to kickstart her redemption with a bang.
The 21-year-old Filipina pride on Monday night scored an easy 6-3, 6-1 win over No. 34 Diane Parry of France in only 77 minutes in their first encounter ever.
She then drew the No. 6 seed and world No. 13 Ms. Shnaider in the Round of 16 after the latter’s fiery comeback win on Tuesday against No. 66 Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan. Ms. Shnaider, a French Open semifinalist this year, boasts a career-high ranking of No. 11 with five titles in her belt.
With an extra day to prepare in their first meeting, Ms. Eala is liking her chances even against a higher-ranked foe albeit she’s just grateful to finally have gotten back on track after consecutive setbacks.
“Thank you so much for the support. It really makes my job very fun, even in the difficult moments, so I’m really happy to be here,” beamed Ms. Eala in her first tour win this month.
As per the WTA, it’s Ms. Eala’s 34th Tour-level win this season, more than doubling her 15-win tally in her entire career before a banner 2026.
That magical run, however, hit a roadblock in the past month with Ms. Eala absorbing back-to-back early exits via massive upset as the way higher-ranked bet.
As the No. 3 seed, Ms. Eala succumbed to No. 120 Tatiana Prozorova of Russia in the WTA 500 Singapore Open Round of 16 before falling as the No. 13 seed against No. 177 Han Shi of China in the WTA 1000 Wuhan Open Round 1.
Ms. Eala, as the top seed, also settled for bronze in the 20th Asian Games in Japan after a semifinal loss to No. 81 Xiyu Wang of China.
A win in Ningbo against Ms. Shnaider would push her to the quarterfinals, likely against her good friend and world No. 12 Iva Jovic of the United States, whom she has not beaten in three battles thus far.
Ms. Eala’s latest defeat to Ms. Jovic was in the US Open third round, 5-7, 6-3, 5-7, that served as her last great run before a rough start to the Asian swing.
And she is hoping to finally regain that groove in Ningbo. — John Bryan Ulanday
