TikTok is seeking to acquire multiple gigawatts of computing capacity in the United States, according to a post circulating on X.
No verified announcement from TikTok has surfaced to confirm the plan. The company does not appear in AI-focused data center trackers, and its publicly known infrastructure projects are much smaller. So this is a claim worth watching, not a deal worth pricing in.
What a gigawatt actually buys you
One gigawatt equals 1,000 megawatts. “Multiple gigawatts” therefore implies thousands of megawatts of power feeding servers, chips and cooling systems.
TikTok’s known data center builds have been sized in the hundreds of megawatts. Its Project Clover effort in Finland targets roughly 150 MW in total, spread across phases, with construction starting in 2025.
A separate project in Brazil is planned at an initial capacity of about 300 MW, powered by renewable energy.
A new owner, a new appetite
In January 2026, TikTok’s US entity went through a major ownership restructuring following regulatory changes. Control passed to a consortium led by Oracle, with Silver Lake and MGX also involved. ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent, kept a minority stake in the US operations.
Historically, TikTok US has leaned on infrastructure partners, particularly Oracle, rather than owning large data centers itself.
The crowded race for power
Demand for AI infrastructure has pushed OpenAI, Microsoft and Google to announce gigawatt-scale projects, and Amazon is building at similar scale. Power supply constraints are expected to keep weighing on data center development through 2027 and into 2028.
TikTok has not been named as a contender in this landscape. Its North American footprint has remained notably smaller than the hyperscalers’ multi-gigawatt plans.
ByteDance has focused much of its data center spending outside the US, including projects tied to European data sovereignty rules and a range of other international sites, mostly at the scale of hundreds of megawatts.
What this means for TikTok and its rivals
If TikTok US does pursue multiple gigawatts, the most direct beneficiary would likely be its partners. Oracle already sits at the center of TikTok’s US infrastructure and now leads the ownership group, so any capacity expansion could flow through its cloud and data center business.
For rival hyperscalers, a new large buyer adds pressure to an already tight market. More demand chasing the same constrained power supply tends to push up prices for capacity and lengthen waits for grid connections.
Gigawatt-scale projects take years to permit, power and build. Securing turbines, transmission lines and utility agreements during a projected multi-year power crunch is the hard part.
Large capital commitments require alignment among Oracle, Silver Lake, MGX and minority holder ByteDance. The signals to watch are concrete ones: site announcements, utility filings, power purchase agreements or capacity contracts naming TikTok US or its partners.
