The Chairman of the Electoral Committee of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Barrister Lanre Glover, has assured stakeholders of a free and fair election to produce a new president and board members on Thursday, October 15, 2026.
Speaking with sports journalists in Abuja at the weekend, Glover said all contestants would be given equal opportunity in line with the federation’s electoral guidelines, adding that the committee would operate strictly within its jurisdiction as defined by NBBF statutes.
He disclosed that five aspirants were nominated for the presidency, but only three were cleared outright.
Those cleared are Olumide Joshua Oyedeji, Dr Mustapha Abdullahi and Ejike Ugboaja.
Mark Ugoche was given until Monday, October 12, to submit his outstanding tax clearance certificate or risk disqualification, while Ayo Bakare was disqualified for submitting his form at 2:12 p.m., 12 minutes after the deadline.
“Of the five presidential candidates, one is disqualified, Ayo Bakare, and one has a condition to meet, failing which he will be disqualified. His tax clearance must come in by Monday at the latest,” Glover stated.
On the issue of the federation’s most senior member within FIBA, Glover said a formal communication from FIBA addressed to the NBBF, not the Electoral Committee, was required to resolve the matter.
Meanwhile, Ugo Udeze emerged as sole nominee for vice-president and was cleared to contest.
For zonal representatives, Osaze Omoroghon and Fubara Fibiga will contest South-South; Yusuf Surajo and Shaibu Mohammed will contest North-West; Adesanya Babatunde Adeola and Babatunde Ogunade (Babs Ogunade) will contest South-West. Abubakar Kaka is sole candidate for North-East.
Glover maintained the committee is committed to compliance with established rules.
The election holds at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.
