Some may call it excessive, but I like to swap out my handbags along with everything else in my closet when the seasons change. Bag trends may evolve at a slower pace than, say, our day-to-day clothes, but I do think there’s a difference between summer and winter bags. Darker colors, heavier materials, moodier vibes—there’s something so romantic about cold-weather accessories.
At this year’s fall-winter runway shows, practicality led the way on the handbag front. No more teeny-tiny bags or pieces purely there to accessorize. Instead, I spotted a slew of slouchy shoulder bags and large bowling bags that hung off models, ready to hold an entire day’s worth of essentials. This season’s It-bags, therefore, are all meant to support the woman on the go—one who’s got places to be and people to see.
That means that even the smaller picks, like the barrel numbers every street-style influencer loves right now, are big enough to carry a phone, wallet, keys, and headphones. Instead of the super-stiff and structured shapes you might be imagining, however, there’s a certain relaxed appeal to my favorites, giving them a bit of a louche, lived-in look. Shop this season’s trending bags (including plenty that’ll fit over a wool coat) below.

We’re on a ’90s-revival streak this fall, and the barrel bag is one of the decade’s defining silhouettes—so of course it’s being resurrected for a major comeback. (Just look at the renewed interest in The Row’s ’90s bag, which was first introduced in 2014 but is now really catching on with the fashion crowd.) The simple yet chic design pairs effortlessly with CBK-inspired minimalist outfits, like a knee-length pencil skirt and a turtleneck sweater. Plus, they’re the perfect size and shape for throwing over your shoulder for a night out.
Insider tip: The barrel bag is best suited for evening events. Style yours with wispy, sheer garments or pared-back looks with little to no ornamentation.

Last year, slouchy totes skyrocketed in popularity (more on that below!), and the soft shoulder bag is here to piggyback off its success. Major bag brands like Chanel, Celine, and Bottega Veneta have all introduced decently sized shoulder bags—ones that carry all the important stuff without bogging you down. Practicality leads the way again, with straps long enough to fit over thick coats and pouches large enough to carry the essentials. What more could you want?
Insider tip: These bags are meant to be worn everywhere but the office, so choose a color that best complements the rest of your wardrobe.

3. The slouchy tote

With recent runway cosigns from The Row, Chanel, Stella McCartney, and Valentino, the roomy, slouchy tote bag has perhaps never been more desirable. Today’s working woman needs an accessory that can keep up with her 9-to-5 and her 5-to-9. And no matter what your commute looks like, that’s probably a voluminous tote with enough room to schlep a laptop, lunch, gym clothes, and your current book. These reasonably priced picks are durable enough for work and will earn plenty of compliments at happy hour.
Insider tip: Slouch goes hand in hand with delicacy, especially in the case of genuine suede and thin leather. Protect your purchase with water-repellent suede spray and anticracking leather conditioner.

4. The bowling bag

Perhaps it would be faster to list the designers that didn’t include a bowling bag in their fall-winter collections. From Miu Miu to The Row to Louis Vuitton, nearly every notable label introduced its own take on the roomy bag. Some were big enough to double as weekenders, like the Altuzarra Cubetto bag. Bowling bags, which are sometimes referred to as doctor bags or Boston bags, can carry as much as a black hole, making them just as apt for work as for weekend hangs.
Insider tip: These make excellent city accessories. The spacious interior and zip closure make them secure, stylish, and functional for a day of shopping or exploring.

5. The whimsical bag

I’m excited to see a general shift towards more whimsical ways of dressing. More color, more textures, and more interesting silhouettes are taking over city streets worldwide. Tasseled bags, in particular, are on the rise, as are satin, wristlets, and unique prints and patterns. It’s completely normal to carry a lotus clutch or a beaded bag to the function now—and I found six delightful conversation starters below.
Insider tip: Have at least one or two of these silhouettes in your collection for nights out. They instantly enhance an all-black outfit and turn a minimal ensemble into a statement look.
