Egypt pledges support to Saudi Arabia in Yemen conflict against Houthis

Richard Mortel from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Egypt has declared its readiness to support Saudi Arabia in its conflict with Houthi militants in Yemen, according to a statement reported by social media sources. This move underscores Egypt’s longstanding position of shared security interests with Saudi Arabia and aligns with recent joint condemnation of Houthi attacks on Saudi targets. While the statement does not specify military involvement, it indicates diplomatic backing and could influence regional dynamics in the ongoing conflict.

The market for whether Houthi forces will enter Aden by October 31, 2026, reflects a declining likelihood, currently priced at 5.3% for a YES outcome. This represents a decrease from 12% a week ago, suggesting that Egypt’s support for Saudi Arabia may be perceived as strengthening Saudi defensive capabilities against potential Houthi advances. The odds for Houthi entry by December 31, 2026, stand at 25.5%, indicating a more cautious outlook for potential developments later in the year.

The broader geopolitical context and potential military support could impact the strategic calculations of both the Houthi forces and the Saudi-led coalition. Market participants appear to be pricing in the possibility that Egypt’s involvement could bolster Saudi Arabia’s position, making a Houthi incursion into Aden less likely.

What to Watch

Observers should monitor any additional diplomatic or military commitments from Egypt that could further influence the regional balance of power. Key indicators would include any formal military cooperation agreements or joint exercises between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Developments in the conflict, such as renewed Houthi offensives or Saudi-led military responses, could also affect market perceptions and pricing. The situation remains fluid, and any shifts in the political or military landscape could impact the probability of a Houthi entry into Aden.
