Classy midfielder led Dundee to Scottish Cup final and scored memorable derby goal
Giorgi Nemsadze, the Dundee cult hero and former captain of Georgia, has died at the age of 54.
The classy midfielder, regarded as one of the most gifted players ever to pull on a dark blue jersey, reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack in his native Tbilisi.
Signed from Reggiana in 2000, he became a revered figure at Dens Park, captaining a star-studded side during the Ivano Bonetti era that famously featured Argentine icon Claudio Caniggia and Italian great Fabrizio Ravanelli.

Nemsadze made 96 competitive appearances across three years at Dundee and etched his name into history in 2003 by leading the club to a first Scottish Cup final in four decades, scoring a dramatic semi-final winner against Inverness Caledonian Thistle at Hampden. His majestic chipped goal against Dundee United at Tannadice remains one of the most iconic Dundee Derby moments of the modern era.
He was formally inducted into the Dundee FC Hall of Fame in 2010 and played for the club a final time in the Julian Speroni testimonial versus Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in 2015.
A club statement read: "Everyone at Dundee Football Club is deeply saddened by the passing of former player and Hall of Fame inductee Giorgi Nemsadze aged 54. Everyone at the club extends their condolences to Giorgi’s friends and family at this incredibly difficult time."
Former Dundee teammate Gavin Rae posted on X: “Rip Giorgi. An absolute pleasure to share a park with you and marvel at your ability as a teammate. So sad. Thoughts to all your family.”
Nemsadze won 69 international caps between 1992 and 2004 - earning 17 during his time on Tayside - and frequently captained Georgia alongside national icons like Kakha Kaladze and Shota Arveladze.
He started and finished his playing career with Dinamo Tbilisi, who he later served as sporting director and head coach, while he also represented Hamburg, Trabzonspor and Grasshoppers, among others.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze led the tributes, stating: "I express my deep sorrow over the death of Giorgi Nemsadze. This is a tremendous loss for Georgian football. As the former captain of Georgia’s national team, an outstanding professional and a leader with a fighting spirit, he successfully represented both the national team and Georgian and foreign clubs.
"With his distinctive playing style and perseverance, he left a lasting mark on the history of Georgian sport. I extend my heartfelt condolences to Giorgi Nemsadze’s family, loved ones, teammates and the entire country”
Former club Dinamo Tiblisi stated: "Former captain of Georgian national team and our team Giorgi Nemsadze has died. With a heavy heart, we send our condolences to the family and relatives. Rest in peace captain."
