Keanu Reeves has been an exceptionally busy man in the last couple of years. If he hasn't been playing an angel in Good Fortune or voicing a gun-toting hedgehog in Sonic The Hedgehog 3, he's been rocking out on stage with his band Dogstar and acting out on stage with his buddy Alex Winter in Waiting For Godot. Heck, he even brought back Canada's Greatest Stuntman Duke Caboom, albeit briefly, in this summer's Toy Story 5. Now, THR is reporting that Reeves is in talks to add something very exciting to his pipeline: James Wan's English-language remake of Lee Won-tae's 2019 action-thriller The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil.
A crowd-pleasing hit in the Midnight Madness slot at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, Lee Won-tae's twisty, turn-filled original movie starred Don Lee — who also goes by Ma Dong-seok — and Kim Mu-yeol as a gangster and a cop who reluctantly team up to catch Kim Sung-kyu's psychopathic serial killer. A ripping thriller that speaks the universal language of pulse-pounding action and suspense, The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil was actually snapped up by Paramount four years ago for the remake treatment. Wan's movie, whose screenplay has been through the typewriters/laptops of Eric Pearson (Thunderbolts*, The Fantastic Four: First Steps), John Wick and Rebel Moon writing alum Shay Hatten, and L.A. Confidential scribe Brian Helgeland thus far, will see Lee reprise his role from the original film. Whether Keanu Reeves is on as 'The Cop' or 'The Devil' remains to be seen at this stage (though the Constantine fans within us will, of course, be hoping he's the former.)
All being well, The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil is set to mark James Wan's long-awaited return to the feature directorial hotseat, his last directing gig to date having been 2023's Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom. As for Reeves, this is just another exciting project on the ever-busy actor's horizons, joining the likes of pirate-and-shark-fighting time loop actioner Shiver, Sonic The Hedgehog 4, Ruben Östlund's The Entertainment System Is Down, and an as-yet-untitled mystery LEGO movie from Josh Cooley and Patty Jenkins. Breathtaking, we think you'd all agree!
