South African musician and comedian Keith Juluka served up something truly local on 13 October 2026, and the internet could not get enough. The Johannesburg-based content creator posted a short backyard clip on Instagram that turned a simple list of ingredients into a full-blown cultural moment.
In the video, Juluka sings a catchy, call-and-response style song about vetkoek, rattling off the basic recipe: flour, salt, yeast, sugar and water. A woman beside him holds up a magwenya and sings along with him, the two of them feeding off each other's energy in a way that felt completely unscripted and fun.
The man behind the magwenya anthem
Juluka is no stranger to viral moments. As a Xhosa man who grew up learning Afrikaans in Johannesburg classrooms, he built his name by blending comedy, language and culture into music that resonates across South Africa's diverse communities. His stage name pays homage to Juluka, the legendary crossover band formed in 1979 by Johnny Clegg and Sipho Mchunu.
Beyond his music, Juluka is also a published children's author. His hit track Gunsteling was turned into a physical alphabet book by Lapa Uitgewers, and he has since taken his work on the road through a schools tour, performing live at primary schools across the country.

Mzansi reacts to the banger
South Africans in the comments section on the Instagram page made it clear the song had struck a chord:
@seulu18 said:
"The Gwinya is actually delicious."
@rooiselbrah wrote:
"I don't think a song can get more South African."
@fikzozo1 declared:
"🔥🔥🔥 This banger is fire 🔥🔥🔥"
@chefjulz101 called it:
"Anthem yamaGwinya [Anthem of the magwenya] 😂🙌🔥"
@muteyyy_05 asked:
"Can I find this on Spotify 😭"
@drcrouchy joked:
"Apply for an education grant... this is what we must teach in Life Orientation... no one is listening to that just say no 😂"
@roli_roll_some_more added:
"Hai but this guy and his lady are always making my day..."
The clip tapped into something genuinely South African, a fried dough treat known by different names across the country: vetkoek in Afrikaans, magwenya in Zulu and Xhosa, and mandasi in Malawi, as one commenter pointed out. One thing everyone agreed on was that the song slaps.
