An iffy Premier League start becomes a dismal one — cause for alarm?
As of right now, we’re in a bit of trouble.
I despise the fact that I’ve had to type that sentence and I accept that it’s still early in the season and with plenty of time for things to change, but the fact is that Sunderland are enduring a terrible opening stanza of their 2026/2027 Premier League season.
Although Thursday night’s Europa League victory over Torreense was memorable, this crash-and-burn display against the Cherries was a brutal comedown and featured all the hallmarks of this lethargic, disjointed side in full cry.
From back to front (bar Robin Roefs, who was exceptional), the Lads were dismal on Sunday and even though Régis Le Bris shuffled the starting eleven in an attempt to shore things up and seemingly eke out a 0-1 away win, it backfired spectacularly, leaving the head coach with yet more wreckage to sift through and a group of players for whom the highs of 2025/2026 must seem a lifetime away.
This wasn’t inevitable.
Something has gone badly awry in between seasons and if we’re to haul ourselves out of this funk and begin to climb the table, crossing our fingers and hoping for the best isn’t an option. We need to make it happen. Now.
Defensive errors torpedo Sunderland’s chances once again
A running theme of our fledgling league campaign is that we’ve often played well without getting the rewards — either due to mistakes at the back or a lack of threat up top, and that theme continued on Sunday as the previously solid red and white backline boasted all of the seaworthiness of a rotting wooden lifeboat.
Shambolic defending led to Bournemouth’s opener as Marcus Tavernier was on hand to head the hosts into the lead after a dreadful mix up at the back, and things got worse when Kevin Danso saw red for hauling down Evanilson after being beaten for pace by the Brazilian forward.
That essentially killed the game as a contest and from that moment on, it became a grind of the highest order for anyone in a pink shirt before Omar Alderete played the kind of pass that would’ve made Milan van Ewijk blush as Evanilson nipped in to make it 0-2.
To put it bluntly, there was just…nothing there.
The lack of an attacking threat with several wingers on the bench, Trai Hume in a role that had no clear definition and no Brian Brobbey was stark; the midfield lacked power and punch, and the whole thing just felt utterly insipid as we sought a way back into the game.
Additionally, the once-inspirational Granit Xhaka looked out of sorts and perhaps that’s the most alarming thing: if our captain and figurehead is having an ineffectual day at the office, what chance of winning from any position, let alone the one in which we found ourselves on Sunday?
Régis Le Bris feels the heat as his plans are shredded
The notoriously unflappable Lads gaffer is about as likely to show any outward signs of panic as Manchester City fans are to demonstrate some humility after their financial scandal was exposed, but even he must be starting to feel the pressure as results continue to slide and his players show no signs of turning their domestic downturn around.
We can talk systems, tactics and selections (the ongoing omission of Chemsdine Talbi looks ever more ridiculous given Malick Fofana and Nilson Angulo weren’t selected for this one and the Moroccan is arguably better than both of them), and Sunderland’s playing style currently falls horribly between two stools — not reliable and tough enough to grind out results yet not refined enough to play slick, entertaining football with the results to match.
It’s all a bit messy, to be honest, and I’m struggling to see where the solutions are coming from and if they’re likely to work.
Hoping that other sides prove worse than ourselves for vast stretches of the season or that things will magically work out for the best are not viable approaches, and we need to somehow get through this week’s Europa League clash with Lech Poznan with something to show for our efforts before gearing up for a crunch meeting with Leeds at the weekend.
Le Bris has faced challenges at Sunderland before. This may be his stiffest yet.
Have Sunderland lost their edge? The evidence would suggest so
All summer, I was concerned about the threat of complacency and of those at the club feeling that they’d “cracked it” following a memorable 2025/2026 season.
Could they maintain their hunger, fighting spirit and determination to keep driving forward when 2026/2027 began? That was the hope, but it doesn’t seem to be the case right now.
Fragility has replaced ferocity and nerves have replaced never-say-die spirit, with several players looking like shadows of their former selves and not performing to the levels we expect. Le Bris will be criticised but his men have to up their game and prove that they aren’t merely one-season wonders at this level.
The next two league games are critical and six points must be the net result. A big fortnight awaits and we cannot allow this slump to become a full-blown struggle for top flight survival.
