US Vice President JD Vance has criticised Western liberal policies on immigration and diversity following reports that the town hall in Limoges, France, built in 1873, was set ablaze by protesters.
Vance, in a post on X reacting to the incident, blamed what he described as the failure of Western liberal leaders to address assimilation and compatibility, arguing that their approach to diversity had contributed to the situation.
“Western liberals imported the third world into France and other countries in the name of diversity and compassion. They ignored fundamental questions of assimilation and compatibility. They were told it would lead to this and they didn’t listen,” he wrote.
The US vice president expressed concern over the reported fire and called on France to protect its historic landmarks.
“I pray that France, a beautiful country of amazing people, will stop this madness before more of its landmarks burn,” he added.

Vance also used the incident to criticise Democrats in the United States, suggesting that Americans should view the events in France as a warning about the consequences of their political approach.
“And I hope Americans are paying attention. This is the future congressional Democrats seek for your country,” he said.
The remarks come amid widespread protests across France on October 17 over rising living costs and deteriorating public services. Demonstrations in several cities escalated into violence, with fires, looting and clashes with police reported. The French government blamed violent elements and criminals for the unrest, while the demonstrations were initially driven by economic and public service concerns.
The fire at Limoges town hall caused extensive damage to the historic building, with local authorities reporting that the roof had collapsed and much of the structure had been affected.
