Some 78% of people in the UK intend to take an overnight trip in the country, according to VisitBritain, up three percentage points on August and above the level recorded in September 2025.
The September Domestic Sentiment Tracker, published on 22 September, suggests travel intentions have recovered from a dip earlier in the summer.
Costs and weather remain the main barriers, however. Weather was the most commonly cited obstacle to an overnight UK trip in the next six months, named by 35% of respondents. Rising living costs were cited by 29%, and increasing holiday and leisure costs by 28%. The findings cover general travel intentions rather than confirmed bookings or demand for caravans and motorhomes.
For those weighing up a touring holiday, the question is whether buying a vehicle makes financial sense. Doncaster-based Adwick Caravans, which sells new and used motorhomes and caravans, says the decision should start with how people want to holiday.
"For anyone considering buying a caravan or motorhome, the starting point should be how they want to holiday and how often they expect to get away," said William Lee, managing director at Adwick Caravans. "Having your own vehicle gives you flexibility over destinations and dates, but it's important to weigh up the purchase price and running costs against the use you'll get from it."
Costs extend well beyond the purchase price. Insurance, servicing, fuel, storage and campsite fees all need to be factored in when comparing ownership with hiring for occasional trips. The Camping and Caravanning Club's buying guidance recommends hiring first to establish which vehicle and layout suit the buyer, and advises allowing for winter storage costs when purchasing during the quieter season.
Prospective buyers can compare 2027 models at the Motorhome and Caravan Show at Birmingham's NEC from 13 to 18 October.
