A plane passenger recently found a rather pointed way to ask for more personal space: putting the spike of her earring through her sleeve. Her neighbour claims it ‘stabbed’ him during turbulence, while she says it finally stopped him touching her.
Kadia Tubman’s unusual approach to an armrest dispute prompted a complaint to cabin crew on a Delta flight. But she insists it followed several unsuccessful attempts to get the man beside her to move over.
Writing on Instagram, Tubman described arriving at her aisle seat to find her neighbour working with his laptop resting on the shared armrest. She initially let him carry on, leaving her own arm off it.
‘I let it be because he was working. When I settled into the aisle seat I leaned against the arm rest but didn’t put my arm on it because he was all over it,’ she wrote.
The problem, according to Tubman, was that he didn’t stay on his side of the armrest. His arm repeatedly rubbed against hers, while his lifting of the armrest kept waking her as she tried to sleep.
‘I politely told him and demonstrated how his arm was hitting me. He said there was no space,’ she wrote.
Tubman explained that she understood the lack of room, which was why she had let him use the whole armrest to work. Although he moved away, the extra space apparently didn’t last.
After another reminder and another attempt to sleep, she claimed his arm woke her again. Deciding she was ‘done’, she took off an earring and pushed it through her sleeve.
‘He would’ve had to be so close to me to be poked,’ she says. The makeshift boundary nevertheless brought their disagreement to something of a head, with Tubman claiming that Otto called the earring a ‘weapon’ and threatened to involve his lawyer.
‘He demanded I remove my earring. When I refused, he asked if it was necessary and I said, “Yes, clearly, because you finally stopped touching me”,’ she added.
Her neighbour presented things a little differently. Sharing a photograph of the silver earring protruding from her blue jumper, he accused Tubman of becoming angry simply because he had used the armrest before take-off.
‘She installed an earring on her sleeve to poke me. I didn’t mind ’till the turbulence when it stabbed me,’ he later wrote online. ‘I calmly asked her to remove it, she wouldn’t, and told me I was taking up too much of my seat ’cause I’m a man.’ He also questioned whether her actions were legal.

Cabin crew eventually became involved, although the pair’s accounts differ over that conversation too. Tubman accused Otto of telling a flight attendant she had leaned towards him and stabbed him during turbulence, which she denied.
Tubman said she offered to discuss the incident with him and airline staff at the gate. Otto said he reported it upon landing and was asked to wait after getting off the plane, but left because he needed to get to work.
According to Tubman, she waited and called out as he walked past, but he kept going. She eventually left after waiting for the captain.
