October the 14th, 2026 – A total renovation is on the cards for the iconic Zagreb Railway Station, with new facilities and much needed modernisation coming as part of it.
Zagreb Main Railway Station is one of the most recognisable places in Zagreb. It was opened back in 1892, at a time of strong development of railway traffic and modernisation of the city, according to a design by the Hungarian architect Ferenc Pfaff. Poslovni reports that while the beautiful station has served as a backdrop for many series and films, passengers frequently complain about the lack of facilities, as well as the fact that the space should be renovated. That is precisely what is about to happen.
“HŽ Infrastructure, together with the consortium of bidders Intekonzalting d.o.o. and PlanAxis d.o.o., has signed a contract for the preparation of technical documentation for the complete renovation of the Zagreb Main Railway Station building. The preparation of the conceptual and main design, including the obtaining of all necessary permits, is currently underway. The preparation of the technical documentation is proceeding according to the planned dynamics, and its completion is scheduled by the end of 2027,” they say at HŽ.
protected cultural property
They note that the project envisages a complete structural, energy and architectural renovation of the Zagreb Main Railway Station building.
“A comprehensive rehabilitation and strengthening of the load-bearing structure will be carried out, and the selected methods will be minimally invasive in order to preserve the structural system, original materials and design elements. The architectural and construction renovation covers the façades, roof structure and interiors under conservation supervision in order to preserve the cultural and historical value of the building, which has the status of a protected cultural property. Special emphasis is on the energy renovation, which includes the replacement of existing windows and doors and the installation of heat pumps with the possibility of using renewable sources,” they explain at HŽ Infrastructure.
a brand new underpass? maybe…
The start of construction works on the Zagreb Main Railway Station building is planned after the completion of the project documentation and the implementation of the procurement procedure for the execution of the works. The planned duration of the construction works is around three years, and completion of the works is expected in 2031.
“During the renovation of the Main Railway Station building it will be necessary to close certain parts of the building, and depending on the organisation and phases of the works it is also possible to close the entire building. The organisation of passenger movement, train traffic and everyday use of the station zone will be adapted to the needs and dynamics of the renovation, taking into account passenger safety and the uninterrupted flow of railway traffic. As part of the project, the possibility has been left open for the construction of a new direct underpass beneath the Main Railway Station building, i.e. beneath the vestibule, which would directly connect the building with Tomislav Square. Further elaboration and possible realisation of the underpass are within the competence of the City of Zagreb,” our interlocutors say.
