Yuleidy Ixcotoyac, from the village of El Jocote in the Sacapulas district of Quiché department, began experiencing severe chest pain in the early hours of October 10, 2026.
Her father, Abraham Ixcotoyac, was driving her towards a health centre when she lost consciousness in the vehicle.
Neighbours, relatives gathered at the family home for Yuleidy's wake
Abraham later told local media that just before reaching the municipality of San Pedro Jocopilas, he could not detect any breathing or heartbeat in his daughter.
Convinced she had died, he turned the vehicle around, collected a coffin from a funeral home, and brought her body home without ever entering a medical facility. No doctor examined her, and no formal declaration of death was ever issued.
Neighbours and relatives gathered at the family home for the wake. Yuleidy's mother, Lesvia Ríos, was standing beside the coffin, weeping, when she reportedly noticed her daughter's body moving.
